Just received a quote for dodgers for my new to me boat. It's been a while since I've owned a boat but just shy of £350 for dodgers does see quite high. Is this a "Hamble price" or am I just out date? Dodgers are to be canvas with a 7 letter sail number. Any suggestions for suppliers please?

The cost of dodgers is sitting in a deeper feeling cockpit with restricted view out.
However, accepting that they can cut down the wind chill and water ingress, have you thought about white dodgers to make the cockpit a lighter feeling place? So many dodger seem to be blue. I've chucked two sets of those away on boats I have bought. I suppose clear dodgers would be a step too far. Or would they?

In unpleasant weather at sea they give a welcome bit of protection from spray and wind

I've certainly not found any significant restriction in visibility.

Give a little bit of extra privacy when at anchor etc so for that reason would not opt for clear ones

A pram hood gives even more valuable protection but that does restrict visibility. So much so that we always lowered it when entering or leaving harbour.

I doubt the clear material would be strong enough to take the eyes, especially after a while when it gets brittle.

Depends what clear material is used. I've seen dodgers made out of the transparent stuff used for high-performance dinghy sails, with a grid of kevlar (or whatever) fibres in it.

I had a quote for new dodgers from a local sailmaker. The problem was that as my boat has a name comprising 11 letters this nearly doubled the price of the canvas work alone.
I got a price and did the design on-line from www.goldfinchcovers.co.uk.The result was excellent and several friends have used them as well.
They are currently doing a 10% discount as well.

Had dodgers made last year but didn't add the boats name as I was thinking of changing it and hadn't decided to what. Paid £80 for the pair, blue canvas. Wilkinson sails in Faversham.

My boat came with two sets of dodgers. Both went around the quarter to the pushpit gate! I need to alter (shorten) them as several items of gear on the pushpit have been added or moved and now interfere with the dodgers. One set is "normal" blue canvas and the other clear window material edged in canvas to take the eyes. These are the ones I have used as, being a short-arse, I appreciate being able to see out of the cockpit even if I can't see over the coachroof!

When I had new dodgers made I found that the addition of letters (or numbers) nearly doubled the cost as cutting out letters and individually stitching them involves a lot of extra work in comparison with plain rectangular canvas with eyelets.

One good reason for having a boat with a very short name !!

That was the reason for me using Goldfinch. The quote from the local sailmaker was just over £100, but adding the letters at £5 each put the price way up as my boat name has eleven letters, hence adding £110 to the price.
The letters on the Goldfinch dodgers are heat sealed on and show no sign of wear after 5 years and were included in the price.
