Its an alarming question to ask. Would you really set off across channel without a full tank for the sake of the saving you might make on a miserably 8 gallons?

To be that "carefull" you must be from Yorkshire.

I think I am right in pointing out that you can take red diesel into France for your own boating use provided it is in the boat tank. So any spare you carry should be added to the tank well before you enter a French port.

Have a good trip.

I would happily set off without a full tank. I would however make sure I had enough.

I use one third of a gallon an hour - Ramsgate to Calais is max 6 hours motoring (& I usually sail as much as possible even allowing for crossing shipping lanes at 90 degrees and as quickly as possible) so with just half a tank I can get there and back. Plus I can always diver into Dover if there is a problem - or if I am out longer than a tide, take the next tide up channel to Dunkerque.

Enough room for safety? I do Passage Plan before I go!
