Just ordered a replacement anode for my autoprop and had to sit down for a bit to catch my breath. The cost has increased by 40% over the last 5 years to £78.10 incl of shipping. Is that in line with general anode cost increases? If so I'll have to do a bit more sitting down when I replace the saildrive anode and the big anode bolted to the hull is also due for replacement this year. Yikes!!

Interested as to why you have a hull anode and what it is protecting.

Good question, I asked the engineer who last worked on the engine and he was a bit unspecific so I need to trace it back. However it does erode so it must be protecting something and I’d rather be safe than sorry

Best to check as normally on a saildrive boat there is nothing that needs protecting - certainly not the engine. If the boat is post 2012 then it may be a ground for the electrics (requirement of the RCD) but most only fit very small anodes for this. I have a small disc type about 40mm diameter and have changed it once since 2015, although it has barely eroded in the last 3 years.

A knowed yed say that!
Sorry ‘ bout that .
No pun un-tended

One for the chemists : Do annodes erode , or function, by decay as a whole ‘sponge’ or by virtue of surface area only ?
Because , is it possible/worthwhile /plain silly to cut down enormous old part wasted anodes to create bespoke little ‘uns? Given that their pricing makes gold look cheap ..

I have trimmed down brand new ones in the past to fit the fridge cooling plate when the correct size was simply unavailable at time of lift out, for example...
Just wondering

and yet I received some work related scientific lab supplies next day from a Dutch supplier via DHL
Just found this ..
Online bike parts retailer Dutch Bike Bits has announced that with the advent of Brexit, the UK will become the only country in the world to which it will not ship goods. The firm explained that this was because the UK is now asking overseas firms to apply and collect British taxes on behalf of the British government when selling to UK customers.

From January 1, the government introduced a new model for the VAT treatment of goods arriving into Great Britain from outside of the UK.

It says these measures ensure that goods from EU and non-EU countries are treated in the same way and will mean UK businesses are not disadvantaged by competition from VAT-free imports.

The point at which VAT is collected has moved from the point of importation to the point of sale and online retailers are therefore being asked to register for UK VAT and account for VAT to HMRC.

Dutch Bike Bits said that for this service the UK government intends to charge a fee, “to every company in the world in every country in the world which exports to the UK.

Have you read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"? (I don't think I finished it!)

From wiki/Zen_and_the_Art_of_Motorcycle_Maintenance:

"With this, the book details two types of personalities: those who are interested mostly in gestalts (romantic viewpoints focused on being "in the moment", and not on rational analysis), and those who seek to know details, understand inner workings, and master mechanics (classic viewpoints with application of rational analysis, vis-a-vis motorcycle maintenance)."

Its a TT pedal bike ;-) Which is very far from being romantic, its all about getting to the stage of dry vomiting after the last 100 yards ;-)

Good question although they don't erode, which is a wear process, they corrode. The mechanism seems to be pitting, at least on all mine, pits maybe 6-8 mm across. Pitting is definitely a surface process.

Anodes used to be pure zinc but modern versions are alloys with a number of small additions of other metals. I doubt that this would make them spongy but it could affect the pit size and shape.
