Ben - I've recnetly checked this out. A Yanmar 240 with Bravo 3 leg is going to cost in the region of £18k-£20k. Speak to Marine Power up near Deacons, behind Aladdins Cave. Also check out BBMS at Easlands, the guys who put my Yamaha in. There is also RK Maren if you wont go Volvo. About £15K FOR A kad 32. I'd look at The Yamaha or Yanmar. The nice thing about the Yamaha set up is the drive s hydroglide and you get none of the clanking you get on VP or Merc when going into gear.

Ben,

Coastal Rides offered me a 200hp Volvo 41 with 290 DP drive, all checked, new seals etc. serviced, 3 months warranty, for £6,500 plus vat. A similar unit was also available from Westend Marine for a similar price, so it seems to be the going rate.

The best new deal I found for something larger than the D120 I settled on was a combo of a 220 hp Steyr (not sure of the spelling) on Bravo 3, for about £13K. I was offered the Yanmar equive for about £15K.

How big's the boat, don't underestimate the power of twin D120's!

How many hp is your yamaha?

Sounds like with 2nd hand or "pre-loved" engines it might be worth doing.

Thing is, this boat is GRP, so much less maintenance than mine. Its a Triana 25.

Seeing it tomorrow morning.

Would have to sell Playtime, weep weep....

Beer will have to be week after next, off to Spain for a week Sunday.

Nice lookin boats those Trianas'. You should be able to find some secondhand units, especially down your way. More fun anyway, re-hosing with teflon hoses, polishing, repainting them pretty etc. Maybe you'll have to forget the E type for now! You should be concentrating on the girlfriend, for a week or two anyway!

Pretty sure there was an article about re-engineering a Triana with diesels a couple of years ago in MBY. A nice job when it was finished but I think ouch about £30K to do it - albeit with new units. Might be worth a search through back numbers of MBY or contacting IPC to see if you can get hold of the owner to pick his brains: I'm fairly sure he was Solent-based. The main problem, if I recall, was fitting 'em in.

Everything designed by Sonny Levi looks stunning imho and, more importantly, excellent seaboats. But how can you bear to contemplate selling Playtime now that everything's working?

)

hmm, selling playtime would be a big problem, think finding a buyer might be hard as people dont want to pay the money for a wood boat, even one with history and in the condition of mine, plus as you say, having got her this far....weep weep.

But a triana 25 has been on my fave list for a while and its GRP!!! woo hoo!!

Have got the article you mention.

Ben,

September 2001 MBY has an article.

Triana 25 that had a pair of AD31Ps put in (150hp each) - gave it about 40 knots.
Repower cost about £20K - including allowance on the old petrol units.
Boat was insured for £35K after restoration.

The AD31s were a very tight fit.
KAD32s probably won't fit (Too wide)
I doubt very much that AD41s would either (Too long)

Ancasta at Hythe have one with very similar spec (may be the same boat?) for sale at £46K

A Triana should be a great boat for blasting around - not quite as classy as the Huntsman but no wooden boat maintainance to worry about!

Happy hunting

Duncan

Why not look at the Ford Puma's. Nice small compact unit put out about 140 horses and can be mated to the existing drives. A pair of spanking new ones ready to dolt in will see off the best part of 11K. Got to be the way to go if your looking to do it. I've just hoiked a Puma out of a totalled tranny. Lump cost me 500 notes. The marinising bits have set me back another 1800 quid.
Not bad considering that I'll be going desisal route for around 2500 quid. Cheaper than getting another s/h petrol lump.

Just been Pm'ing Tico about this, trubble is that 140 will make boat slower, which is crap as want at least 40 knots.

cost effective way to change though.

Or sell mine, but Triana and put 20k back in bank, keep petrol boat?

Looking at the specs for the Pumah. Its 145 bhp. Revs out to 4700 rpm. So wiv the standard petrol outdrives and a new set of props you'll be hitting somewhere near that mark. How often you gonna have the sea state to do 40 knots in a 25 foot boat, specially in the solent! Plus it'll have abit more torque for 'cceleration.

Twin D120's in a 25ft boat would take it to close on 40 knots.

There is a test of such on the net somewhere, but I can't relocate it.

Doral supply their 28ft cruiser with the option of twin D120's, and it's good for 36 knots.

A Yanmar 240 with Bravo 3 leg is going to cost in the region of £18k-£20k.

Wot a load of old tosh. The price you quoted there is almost the retail price, and only a fool would pay anything like that. The markup on packages is horrendous, allowing companies such as Sunseeker etc to have ridiculous prices, easily explained to the punter with the usual, " well the 3 Yanmars on their own cost £66k.

It's an arguement I had on many occassions with Sowester ref Mercruiser prices.
For example, a 140 merc petrol with an Alpha1, s/s prop, transom assembly, instruments & trim pump used to cost me as a boatbuilder £3,600.00. ( If I wanted to buy the drive on it's own, £3,200.00.. How do you explain that)

Now if you want to go diesel you could buy from Dave Crawford, 300hp Yanmar + Bravo 3 around £14,500.00. Merc 120 with Alpha 1 probably half that!!!!
