Corryvreckan

Re: Gentleman\'s Cruise

We are meeting up at Kilmelford on Thursday Evening for Pre-cruise drinks and a safety talk frae Jimi.
I think the tide is running south on Friday morning so we'll head down to Jura - if Corryvreckan is on then through there and over to Colonsay - if not then perhaps Carsaig or McCormac for lunch then over to Craighouse. Friday can either be through Sound of Islay and over to Colonsay or around to Port Ellen.
Saturday it would be good to end up in Gigha
Sunday perhaps ending up in Tayvallich
Monday return from whence we came

Re: Gentleman\'s Cruise

Have a good one.. I am sending some distilled cauliflower vodka stuff to Kimelford to cheer you all on your voyage..

Hope the fish are plentiful, the weather fine, the Corryvrecken "interesting" and the webcam on Wild Honey works for the cabin and cockpit web broadcast!

The Routen wheel is a phenomenon which appears on the ebb, and is really only a hazard for small boats as it is well inshore. The only real danger in the Strangford narrows for yachts is the bar on the ebb with a strong southerly blowing. Don't even think about it! Oh, and dont attempt entrance at night. Some of the lights are not lit. With a good moon it may be OK, Though with 7 knot flow you are somewhat committed!

Re: MD6A

The black smoke is probably being caused because the engine is overloaded.
The relationship between engine speed /power output and prop pitch / power consumption is not linear, so there is usually some means in the linkage to compensate for this.

A crude way to set this up, is to run the engine at maximum speed and slowly increase the pitch setting. As the boat gathers way, the load on the the engine will decrease, but just keep increasing the pitch until the engine begins to labour or black smoke from the exhaust. Back off a little from this, and you should have the optimum settings for engine speed / pitch relationship. Note these settings and try to set up the combinator system to replicate the results achived on your test.

Running the engine overloaded will of course result in more money having to be spent on it!

Re: MD6A

System is designed to run at a constant throttle setting from about half pitch setting . . . the throttle comes off the cam at that point.

So if the engine is overloaded then it can only mean it needs more fuel if what you say is true.

However, as the black smoke is presumably unburnt fuel then the opposite would appear to be true - i.e. the engine is delivering too much fuel at this throttle setting.

Or - is it delivering insufficient air to burn the fuel?

So - same symptoms, three different diagnoses - and apparently the diesel engine is a very simple beast!

The previous owner wasted over £3000 paying alleged professionals to do pointless work on the (30 year old) engine and butcher the variable pitch gear. Unless someone offers to work on the engine for beer I'll just keep running it at just below black smoke speed (4 knots) and hope I come into the money to buy a new Beta. It's a sailing boat anyway!

(And very economical at 4 knots btw - under 1l/hr)

PS Never did go through the Corryvreckan but did circumnavigate Luing on the Sunday . . . nearly tempted to motor through the Grey Dogs in a flat calm, but at half flood, even at neaps, it was making a strange noise . . . so discretion was the better part and went into Cullipool instead.

Re: Smoke Screen

We'll be under sail all being well, otherwise will keep to an environmentally friendly speed - just get the drinks in for us, we might be a bit late if there's nae wind.

Planning to rendezvous with Claymore and Wild Honey approx. 08:00 round about the bottom of Loch Melfort Friday morning - I'm sure Jimi's planned curry will get you all up early.
