So if the top hat sections need reinforcing (after the keel takes a battering for instance) it can be done without effecting the level of the floor boards.
12 bent 1" keel bolts... I think we are talking about more than reinforcing the bilges.

Looked at it this afternoon: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 37, - quite obviously the keel had previously had a VERY hard grounding, as every one of the stubs of the dozen or so one inch keelbolts was bent backwards. Also evidence of the GRP hull bilge damaged by the keel moving aft. I was particularly interested as I have the 35 ft version of the same design.

So the bolts broke or stayed with the hull rather than the keel?
I would have expected the hull to fail around the bolts?

Nice winter project for someone!

Is there an echo in here?

Yeah.., I echo what JWilson said ! had a look and it obvious it hit something very hard and very fast.

If it was'nt the charterer what did it when the keel fell off, then the previous charterer what did it ought to be hunted down and strung up from the nearest lamppost for endangering future charter's lives by not telling the charter co that they had hit something very hard.

It used to be in the T&C of the site useage, that double post was not allowed. Don't know if it still is.

Bottoms up!

does this mean there is a lump of lead lying around on the seabed waiting for someone to get it stuck in a net ?

Would insurance cover the recovery cost if it fell off in a harbour entrance, f'rinstance?

I heard yesterday that the (iron) keel had been found sitting upright on the bottom of New Grimsby Sound in the Scillies. The insurance company are probably going to recover it and refit it rather than buy a new keel. It does mean that the boat covered a significant distance without it's keel.

Blinking 'eck the skipper and crew must have been absolutely off their rockers to come back from the Scillies keel less! And criminally insane not to tell anyone thus allowing the boat to go into the next charter.

Sorry Sailorman, we were obviously typing at the same time.

OK, how is it double posting ? the forums are entirely different ?
They are not entirely different, a vast majority read and contribute to both of them, and others too. Its one big forum with separate boards.

This is why its considered bad form, and against the rules, because it gets very confusing to be part of two threads on the same subject.

Aha, OK . Thanks for the explanation. won't do that again!

back to the story....

hi everyone, as I was actually on the keel-less in question boat I can assure you cynics out there that this is no conspiracy. Not the best start to a 'try sailing weekend' I can assure you. However, as I was on the helm (although we broached), I have to agree with the comments from Iw395

'I suspect the helm who got it home is probably a good sailor?'

lol :D

Like the 1.7 tons of lead keel bolted to my 2004 vintage 35ft Bavaria?

Now waiting for Uber to pass by and tell me its fake lead!
Good job you havn't mentioned your home port or you might come to your boat and find its keel is missing too! If the "tatters or scrappies" can take lead from church roofs, then even a Bavaria isn't safe from losing iots keel.

Most definately criminal...insane maybe, but if I find out who it was they will be getting a very large piece of my mind! They are directly responsibly for a severe loss of confidence in myself, and the possibility that another member of the crew is highly unlikely to ever set foot off the land again!
