Corfu airport to Gouvia taxis on strike?

Chas, the bar in question's called 'Skippers' and formally it was Arches. I have been in Skippers once or twice in the past and never really took to it.(Loved it when it was Arches, under Brian, and previously run by Theo)
Anyways, these days, it doesn't open until about midninght, and is basically empty. There are a few African girls working there, offering 'Various sevices'. Of course, I'm repeating what a mate told me...not that I have any personal experience of the so called 'activaties' that go on in there.

Regards,

Oh I've been in there but unless it provides rooms for these girls to take their clients to, it's hardly a "Brothel", is it?

Chas

Just out of curiouity, which bar is "The Brothel"? I've been in Gouvia/Kodokali, this time since 2004 and on and off since 1978 but until this recent year or so, never heard this description. Not "The Shack"* or the "Beer Bucket" surely? However, we DO treat the place as a car park and head off south normally within 36hrs of our plane landing so we never get much time to get involved with the ex-pat-comm.

Chas (of the obviously "Sheltered Life")

* met a rather noisy and self-oppinionated Welshman there last time who rather put my wife off the place.

"Skippers" Not the kind of place you or I would enter.
After your last I stand corrected, it's not the kind of place I would enter!

Charlie.Charlie!!

I just read a post in which you castigated a newbie for poor spelling and punctuation..and now you come up with this!!!

In case you don't know what I am referring to...Its "curiosity" not curiouity, and there is only one "p" in opinionated.

As for being self-opinionated..

Oh dear Charlie!

Re-arrange the following words into a well known phrase.."Houses stones shouldn't people in throw glass "
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Do you know Ken?

Do you know, Ken, I was castigating him more for his bolshy arrogance than his spelling.

You missed "who" and "live" BTW

Back to the origional subject.....

Some friends, of friends, were flying in at 2 am, this morning. Tried a taxi mate of mine, to pick them up and deliver to the marina, and in his words...'I'm frightened of driving to the airport to make a pickup'....!!!
So went to the Marina office, and all they could provide/advise was to hire a car!!
They did give us a pile of car hire phone numbers to call.
They confirmed that the Marina were not operating a mini-bus service to the Airport!!.

Regards,

It is a remarkable situation when businesses run by private individuals (owner/driver taxis) voluntarily turn down business. Same with the lorry drivers. It means there is a very strong threat to their livelihood.

Of course, currently the numbers of taxis permitted in each town are limited. This limits competition, means standard pricing can be imposed, and there is plenty of business to go around a limited number of suppliers. So, a licence to supply is valuable - some say €100,000. Bit like the London black cabs - eventually challenged by mini-cabs operating a different "pre-book" model.

The challenge in Greece is coming from car hire firms, who are doing excellent business with tourists, while locals who don't drive take the pain.

Austerity proposals would remove these supply restrictions - thus de-valuing each business, reducing costs for consumers, and allowing more drivers to make a smaller income. With €100,000 at stake, no wonder individual drivers are prepared to forego a few days income, and intimidate others who try to break the strike. I guess the sad thing is that these same austerity measures mean there's no cash around to buy them out, while it is unclear how the strikes may effect decisions - except add to the pressure to remove the restrictions so this won't happen again.

And that's just one example of how the "licence raj" raises costs in the service sector in Greece, making licences valuable, and therefore the sale of licences a source of income for those who control them. Breaking that circle is going to be expensive - either in lost services (tourists), or in the cost of buy-out (devaluing loans).

Sorry, not very sailing oriented. But affects our ablity to travel, eh?

If anybody is desperate, I will be here in Gouvia for another few days and would be able to pick up or drop off at airport or close to it, for nowt, for forum members.

Bravo. What a great gesture. Once again this shows how good these forums can be, even if no one takes up your kind offer, I say thank you for it.
