we are currently anchored outside Gouvia marina waiting for my elderly parents who are flying in on monday night. Apparently the local taxis are still on strike but nobody seems to know if the airport taxis are working. Has anyone flown in in the last few days? I didnt want to hire a car but might have to. If we do have to bus it will they be running at 11pm?

It may be worth having a quiet word with one of the local taxi drivers, what has been happening here on Kefalonia is, the Taxi drivers have been using their own private cars to pick up from airport. (they dont like not earning!)

marina mini buses?

I will be in the same position later this week.. friends flying in on Thursday, and a friend flying out on friday, and I'm booked in for the night in Gouvia. I wonder if Gouvia can be persuaded to follow Lefkas's lead and put on mini-buses?

Anyone with any clout with the marina? Or anyone want to share a car? maybe I'll have to hire one for a day.

Buses were running last Friday ,last one to the airport is about 9.50 pm I think. They seem to run from the port to the main square and then you change to the airport bus. They did run some extra ones on Fri but normally they aren`t that frequent.

Bless `em --- the taxis drivers are doing there best to ensure they won`t have anyone to carry next year so putting up their already high charges won`t help them a bit ,but they just do not get get it do they!

The charge from the Airport to Gouvia Marina has been €16 for locals for a long time but the "Tourist" rate has been €20 for the same length of time. I get charged on average €18 dependant upon the driver recognising me as a regular.

Latest news just two minutes ago from my man on the ground: Pickets on the Marina gate. They smashed the windscreen of a "blackleg" last night who was using his own car and carrying on servicing his "private" customers. Best advice: Rent a car from the airport or the marina. " Ocean rent a car"at the marina gives the best rates in my experience. Gouvia Marina have NOT arranged a minibus as yet.

The Corfoit taxi drivers are quite simply thieves. They are obliged by law to set their meters(according to the controller I spoke to at length a few years ago) but never do and charge what they think they can get away with and are not properly regulated. The fare on the meter from the Airport is probably about 15 euros(never having a meter set this is an educated guess),and I have had cases of them 5 years ago charging our guests 30 euros!,even the children 25 euros from Corfu town(taxi no 120 from memory).I just give them 15 euros or 20 if they are polite and normally they accept this.If they get iffy I point out to them that the meter wasn't set ...and then they get a bit Greek and go back to the Airport for their next target.Regulars, have you noticed how the taxi tarriff at the Airport has been removed,or maybe it's been replaced again...............anyhow best of luck to you all we are now in Montenegro where the people are proud and honest and the food is an experience alone.Marina fees are comparable to Gouvia and not in maybe 50 taxi rides has one tried it on.Also we have flights all year round and the most incredible scenery..and duty free fuel at at +-72c a litre if you check out,but hey Dubrovnik for lunch ain't so bad and back in the evening with full tanks.
If I have time will start a Montenegro thread or PM me for more info

And another thing.....Tivat to Dubrovnik airport including one ferry crossing and a border euros 50 +- 1.5hrs or Podgorica to Tivat 80 euros +- 2hrs,so Corfu to Gouvia on this basis should be about 10 euros but not my problem anymore
Kontokoli going down hill fast, half finished buildings ,the entrance to Gouvia being a mosquito infested drain, rubbish piled high, bar turned into brothel, unimaginative food,....bye bye Corfu.

Apart from that particular bar (so called Brothel), nothing's really changed all that much, in Kontokali, in the last 20 years or so......

I love it!!!

Kontokali

Maybe, but only 10 years ago we didn't have the half finished buildings by Boatmans World ...on the drain, the Opera singer had her restaurant (now delelict and overgrown)near the brothel,SEAPLANES GONE,these were great whilst cruising the Ionian ..and now the threat of taxes on EEC boats in Greek waters paying taxes.
I won't mention the thieving taxi drivers ,not a problem to us residents, but leaves a nasty memory with the tourists,
Last year I went into the port police in Gouvia and they marked the "criusing permit" in red biro saying that we should go to the tax office in Corfu Town and pay what was due.I don't know what was due because being Greece it's all a bit vague and probably up who you know.Apparantlly the tax is OFF/ON so it's probably up to who you know.
I do know people who have paid this tax, allbeit Greeks, but why try and collect it from foriegn nationals..or if it is due just send us an invoice which we can challenge, instead of all this cloak and dagger hist,
I think we were being asked for about euros 6k for the year.....on a par with fees in Gouvia for a 17.5 m yacht.

Just out of curiouity, which bar is "The Brothel"? I've been in Gouvia/Kodokali, this time since 2004 and on and off since 1978 but until this recent year or so, never heard this description. Not "The Shack"* or the "Beer Bucket" surely? However, we DO treat the place as a car park and head off south normally within 36hrs of our plane landing so we never get much time to get involved with the ex-pat-comm.

Chas (of the obviously "Sheltered Life")

* met a rather noisy and self-oppinionated Welshman there last time who rather put my wife off the place.

If you are referring to the tax proposed for larger vessels in 2009, that was suspended indefinitely in mid May 2010.

Kotokali

Jim it probably was early May last year when I went into the port office.Heaven help those who paid,I wouldn't like to be trying to get my money back.
Charles ,Skippers I think,1st on right after Boatmans world before Stavs.Mind you some of the other bars there are only a couple of notches up and it's for free!
The Welshman you met and his brother are quite harmless but the former does have strong views after a few Alphas!!
Happy Sailing

Chas, the bar in question's called 'Skippers' and formally it was Arches. I have been in Skippers once or twice in the past and never really took to it.(Loved it when it was Arches, under Brian, and previously run by Theo)
Anyways, these days, it doesn't open until about midninght, and is basically empty. There are a few African girls working there, offering 'Various sevices'. Of course, I'm repeating what a mate told me...not that I have any personal experience of the so called 'activaties' that go on in there.

Regards,
