coppercoat in the Med

Excellent. I know of a boat in Mallorca that was unlifted for five years. Even then the hull was reasonable. My keel is Coppercoated and rarely needs more than quick wash off, whereas the hull usually needs far more.

Interesting, what was the thinking behind copper coating just the keel?

We have been in the Med for three years now and the Copper Coat is doing what it said it will do on the tin. In the warmer weather I just snorkel around with a soft brush and the slime comes off.

Well woth the exspense.

I used it for 5 years in the Ionian, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Ballearics and the S of France it was fine other than when we wintered in a fresh water river. There was some growth then but it only took a couple of hours dive to clean it off.

We did not neet to haul out in that time.

I'd say that Coppercoat is much like a good quality conventional antifoul in deterring underwater growth. Its advantage, as you'll have inferred from the posts above, is that it's easy enough if the water is warm to scrub off any growth by snorkelling, a far cheaper proposition that hauling out each year, even without factoring in the cost of yearly antifoul. Coppercoat's claims for its durability and longevity are completely justified.

Coppercoating a hull can be a major job, not so much in the actual application, which takes just a day (or perhaps two for a large boat, one day each side), as in the removal of old antifoul and surface preparation, which must be done diligently. Whilst professional application by spray produces a somewhat smoother finish, all of this work should be well within the capabilities of most owners.

It wasn't our intention, circumstances conspired to prevent us from doing the whole hull. It was at the time that Holland banned all copper anti fouling, the yard we picked turned out to be very 'green' and the owner proved difficult. My father died, severely curtailing the time we had for the job. We never had a good opportunity since.

Copper coat in Spain

We have had a Sportscruiser in Spain since 2006 and the hull was Copper Coated from new - I swear by it - just a once off wash every year!
I wish there was a product as good for stern drives!!
