I suppose you have a wooden mast? In this case and assuming that your gaff jaws are covered with leather already, you should consider not a complete sheet, but strips of copper or bronze screwed onto your mast at the right place, using strips rather than sheet, you give the wood a chance to dry out and so prevent rot.

I have metal masts, any idea how to protect my paint?

DON\'T DO THAT!!

If you have a real problem with chafe, start by examining your gaff jaws, or saddle. Are they leathered correctly? Is the leather properly lubricated? (with tallow, for preference) Are they the right size and shape? (eg, how big is the tumbler, in the case of jaws.)

If after all that you still think you may have a problem, fit vertical strips in way of the position of the jaws when hoisted. Personally we use thin strips of oak, which stand about 3/16" clear of the mast, and are glued on. Bronze strip as suggested by Ongolo is also good but consider the stability implications if the boat is small.

DO NOT fit a band right round the mast, of copper, GRP (seen it done, by a boatyard that ought to have known better) or anything else, unless you want to buy a new mast, possibly after an uncomfortable acquaintance with the fine men and women of the RNLI...

It will rot underneath. Honest.
