7A cont. drain is not funny on any boat like ours. It will soon flatten any battery leaving you looking a bit daft ! Cool drinks but no power !

So I got a 12v 30A realy of ebay - couple of quid and wired in :

So now my cool-box only fires up when alternator kicks in. Engine off and I can switch to mains transformer 12V. Actually I've kept ciggy plug and socket system so it can still go to car etc. if needed.

Hi Nigel, 7A is a lot. I have just bought a 12V coolbox from Port Solent Super Store for £39 and that is labelled to draw 47W but it seemed to drain a bit more than that when powered up. Luckily I have a windmill which helps but when the wind doesn't blow i guess i will have to use the alternator or go out and buy a solar panel.
I will start another blog to find out best buy solar panels.
cheers
Scotty

Thats a nice beast Nigel it's about half as big again as the one I've mentioned.
Mine at 47W should be if my memory serves me right.....
Watts=Volts x Amps so 47W =12V x Amps .
Therefore Amps = 3.92 Amps. Which is a fair draw of current over a few hours. I think for me on a long journey I would prefer to get 2 of my smaller ones charging 'one on', 'one off', backed up by ice when I can get it.

At one stage I thought of buying a couple of the beer-can coolers that Argos do ... but when I looked at them - they are far too small.

I have thought about setting the box into a bunk base - but then it's lift of cushions etc. to get to it.

But yes it's a good size.
