I just brought my boat home, Up the Pacific west coast from Oregon. Wind NW 15 to 25 the whole way to Neah Bay Seas up to 4m.
In the past I liked to use a pressure cooker, but I don’t have one and couldn’t find one.
Fortunately I picked up a great tip from Dylan. Boiling cans. Without opening them. It made the culinary process much easier. Campbell’s Chunky beef soup, a hot can was a great treat when cold, wet and tired.
The only problem we had was opening the hot can a dishing up the contents. Even tried eating direct from can, It was difficult when full and the boat bouncing.
We also had a gas barbecue steaks worked great but the sausages wouldn’t stay still and kept rolling off. lost a couple overboard.

Thanks Dylan

I have looked at lots of that coast from the land while filming over there making films and radio logging, ocean currents and fishing

would love to sail it one day

doubt that I will

Try Mr Ds Thermal Cooker (UK) or the Shuttle Chef from Thermos, USA, Oz, HK, Japan. A modern interpretation of a straw box (if you are old enough to remember). Beats a pressure cooker any day - but will not BBQ.

Another take on the heatless cooker is http://nb-wonderbag.com/ The main benefit of this one is that you can wedge it in somewhere onboard and forget about it till you want it - similar price to Mr Ds at £70.

Dog bowls are awesome as are wide bottom travel mugs with the anti slip bottoms. The one I have holds a pint and stays hot for a good 2 1/2 hours so well into a night watch!
http://mugsusa.ecrater.co.uk/p/10587340/1-16-oz-wide-base-body-travel (they are much easier to buy in the US where everything is that much bit bigger...)

savoury rice, cous cous or porridge are all easy alternatives to stews and soups that are also good for slow release energy. Try adding nuts like cashews and pine nuts or dried fruit to dishes as they have loads of flavour and are good for the calories.

Dylan may already have covered this aspect of heating unopened cans; I was told to dent the can first, and you know when it is ready because the can pops out under pressure! It worked for me, but open with care as the fountain of red hot juice can travel up to six feet.........

feel free to dent the cans if you wish to

makes no difference to safety or readiness for consumption as far as I can see

just let them simmer for a few minutes before opening

they do spurt a bit if you open them straight sway

so either a jay clother over the top as you pierce them - or wait a few moments

if they are cool enough to hold then they will not spurt

It worked well, without piercing or denting the can no spurting either.
Just the trick for cooking a quick simple hot meal in rough conditions. The lack of clean up was great.
I wouldn't have tried it without having picked it up from Dylan.

We did use wide bottom big mugs. also had a couple of deep plastic bowls.
The dog bowl idea might be worth a try, The cans of beef stew look just the part.

Dylan if you are ever over here with some time on your hands. Drop me a line and I'm sure I can fine a nice remote part of the coast to sail.

Did Cape Disappointment live up to your expectations?

At first I wondered about the name. We put the sails up and sailed of into a favourable light SW and Drizzel and lost sight of the world. It lasted about an hour the wind changed to NW 15 to 20 and when we could still see it 15 hrs later I began to get the idea.
