We have bought a boat with an approximately 10 year old Simpson Lawrence 'gourmet' cooker on it . Is it possible to replace the burners on these (including grill and oven) or is it necessary to get a whole new cooker? The body of the cooker is in very good condition and it also looks as if it might be really difficult to get out. Also I have been unable to locate a similarly sized new cooker.
Apart from the burners being corroded I would also like flame failures on them.
I have looked in various magazines for details of Simpson Lawrence but wonder if they are now trading under a different name. Any advice would be really gratefully received.

Unless it is too late and I have got it completely wrong...............Simpson Lauwrence was bought out by Sowester about a year ago and the combined outfit went bust about 6 months ago.

I don't believe it will be practicable to retro-fit flame failure devices to your cooker.

Unfortunately, 'boat' cookers seem to cost an absolute fortune but are then effectively unrepairable. A new grill burner for a Plastimo cooker costs nearly half the price of the cooker when new. On top of that, a 2-burner/grill/oven cooker costs about double a basic domestic full sized cooker.

The best bet seems to be to stick with brands which are dominant in the caravan market (I think Flavell are still in there?). At least you stand a chance of being able to get spares.

I believe some of the Flavell cookers do not have flame failure devices, check carefully if you purchase second hand.

I'm don't know where you got the price to overhaul a Plastimo cooker but I went back to the manufacturer - they are a small comany in Burnley - would you believe!

For the Princely sum of £90 they replaced the 2 hobs with flame failure units, replaced the grill and made the oven thermostatically controlled - the only original bit left really was the frame. Excellent service and value.

Manufacturer details...

I fitted a "Voyager 2000" cooker in my parents' boat several years ago. It was effectively a Plastimo without the badge - and considerably cheaper! It was made by Leisure Products in Bolton (01204 308458). They sell spares, and the burners have flame failure devices.

I read somewhere that only the retail trading part of SL was taken over by Sowester and subsequently went down with them but that the manufacturing part of the business survives. Don't know where tho'. Maybe duff info anyway.

This is good information. But how do we find this company? (and how did you find out! I'm sure Plastimo didn't tell you?).

I've tried everything I could think of on the search engines, following your leads.

I guess because we're not into metal-bashing down here in the South, we don't have the contacts!!
