The lift pump on my 1GM10 is playing up.
Genuine Yanmar - £136
Copy from Parts4Engines - £45

How is this possible?

I would consider £91 a pretty convincing argument.

Not if it breaks, then again I could buy two and still have a saving...
There's one thread on here about Parts4Engines, anyone else got experience of their parts?

Pattern parts can be awful. It can't really be a general opinion to use them. But the OEM market is charging like a bull for stuff they are selling.
research is the answer. I replaced one piston on my old banger. It was £90. Others are available around the £50 mark but more than one person has told me they are not of reliable quality.

The problem with older vehicles and such is that often there are no OEM parts and even the pattern parts are not cheap, but usually rubbish quality.

Third option is to rebuild/mend the original.
The 'Yanmar' part may well just be the pattern part in a Yanmar box.
Retailers like 'parts4engines' probably shift a lot of product and would get a lot of flak if it failed quickly?
Less so with small operators on ebay etc?

Similar fuel pumps for cars start at about a tenner.

A lot of engine manufacturers do not have sufficient manufacturing runs to get ancillary components specifically designed. They select suitable components from the range available. Problem is finding the correct part. Could I suggest a little lateral thinking. Maybe blank off or indeed leave the fuel pump in place disconnected and fit a well respected Facet in the line for a fractional cost maybe?

I had a water pump for a tractor engine. Obsolete part (it's a classic). Had to have a pattern replacement but the quality of the castings was dire. Sometimes you just have to suck it up. I think I just bought the last exhaust manifold that was genuine. Lovely.

The only brake drums available for Series Land Rovers are all pattern, and possibly from the same foundry. So bad are they that the reputable spares guys won't stock them.

Edit. That sounds very negative. To get back to the thread - most of the pattern parts I've bought have been fine.

Yes I use their parts for my Perkins. I bought a fresh water pump two years ago £124 as apposed to over £400 for the
Perkins pump, it's still working having clocked up 100s of hours. I find them very helpful over the phone, the last thing I bought was a return fuel pipe after I snapped one of the banjos trying to free it.

I would expect that with today’s CNC and laser cutting equipment manufacturing patten parts should be easier and quality more robust and as most is outsourced to specialist company’s , copies are now CAD files so other than material spec should be identical to OEM

That’s good enough for me, part ordered with Parts4Engines.

Thanks guys.

On a side note, when do you stop spending money on your boat?

Most of it is made in China. I don't think the manufacturer of MGB chrome bumpers has ever handled andoriginal one. Probably done from photographs. The curves on the back bumper and the folded ends are usually wrong. The chrome rubs through or rusts off in no time.
If you have an original getting it refurbed and properly rechromed is the best route.

Centrifugal pumps are eminently rebuildable, there's a cottage industry waiting to refurbish your old pump to go round again.

Parts4engines, ex elbows, cooling elbows, various gaskets, lifts pump, cambelts, fan belts, filters, rad caps, stats etc etc, all been okay.

Not worked on a yanmar engine for 15/20 yrs, but some of their lift pumps had little plastic poppet valves that were not repairable/replaceable.

Some of the britpart stuff is truly bad, but add the letter G to the end of any of their parts numbers, and the parts are then much better quality.
