A question, do MDL marinas charge contractors money to work on boats in the marina?

I’ve just had work done and they have added a sum on for this l, but for what ?

Yes, it's MDL practise to charge fees to outside contractors but some of the marina based firms I've used already have permission, eg Hudson Radio, Performance Rigging.

There is reference to the "MDL Contractors’ Registration scheme" but I couldn't find a copy.

Found it. For MDL, click on the marina you're interested in. Then click on "tariffs" then scroll down to the pdf logo and click on that. For MDL Hamble Point ..

Contractor's Pass - £11.20 daily | £726.40 annual

Yes, another p*** take from the marinas, it’s a bit of an insult when you’re already paying a significant sum for a berth, a few people I know refuse to pay it and marinas don’t make a fuss as they don’t want empty berths. The days of ripping people off are coming to an end.

Not really. They are using marina access, electricity, parking amenities etc to make money from the client, & are using additional marina facilities to make money
I think that the contribution is quite acceptable.

What you mean the metered electricity and facilities the berth holder is already paying for ? The client pays however you dress it up so an addition to the berthing fee, all boats need to be maintained.

And the waste facilities. Whenever I drop a small bag of rubbish in the bin at any marina, it always seems to be overflowing with boat equipment boxes, polystyrene and other trade jetsam.

Starting skip diving hobby too. Recently found a Yanmar metal/foam air filter in dusty but otherwise vgc that had been discarded so I rescued it as the manual states washing it, not replacing it. Got a spare now!

I turn up, park the van, work on the boat. If i use any electricity it's that which has been paid for by the customer. Can't see what other facilities i'm using.

If you choose to get an outside contractor to work on your boat and the marina charge £50 per day for that (which you have to pay), will you still think that's acceptable ?

There should be a annual charge of fifty quid to check and put on file insurance details and health and safety method statements.. it takes me to Torquay marina in 2022 when a contractor had fitted a lit name on a six mil boat, it went up in flames later that day . Now if the marina have not done their responsibilities as the owners , then they could be liable . This is a bloke from Stoke thoughts. Why ask me ,I empty bins.

It depends which marina it is for a start and if you used an on site tenant or an outside contractor.
I work in most of the marinas of which fees apply unfortunately.

In answer to what I can tell you it’s for ,
Time taken by staff to hand out keys and administer paperwork .
Water , toilet use, waste disposal , parking etc .
Now my argument for years relating to the above is that ,
Rubbish from the job is the boat owners not mine , if I was a guest out for a day with the boat owner the boat owner has already paid in the berthing fee the cost of his guests parking , using the toilet etc so other than administration for a contractor that really that’s it . I have in the past challenged this , not with MDL as I find them far nicer to deal with than the other large corporate group within the area .
I am sure someone will be along with another version .
