Continual quiz (16)

Ok i win, there are still two old leading lights on the starboard side of the entrance to the oval basin as you go in,i took some pics today but they wont come up,they are right next to the carousel, they look very forlorn,a relic from a bygone day,and they must have led many a ship safetly into that basin over the years,i am away for the weekend so i nominate Damo to have my go.

Very kind I'm sure /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sunstorm: A Time Odyssey
Book II
2037
The sun flares. Thousands die. Suddenly our high-technology civilisation seems terribly vulnerable. We recover. We rebuild. But this is just the precursor.
In April 2042, in just five years, the sun will flare once more.
But this time the sun will hurl out in one day the energy it would normally spend in a year. This time nothing on Earth will survive. As plans are drawn up to save mankind, as all Earth’s resources are mobilised for one unimaginable engineering effort, one question nags: Why now?
An epic account of our epochal struggle to survive - and a revelation of our place in a dangerous universe.

The answer is of course Arthur C. Clarke... now for the next question which I suppose is Googleable.... where in the B.C. is pleasant harbour? and if thats too simple what British record is held in that harbour? ha ha... try Googleing that part then. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I didnt know it was called Pleasant Harbour but did now up until modern days it was a thriving port, now all silted up.

Also there are rumours of a smugling tunnel leading to E.Aberthaw (Blue Anchor or the Old Pottery)
If you go in the Anchor restaurant there are some great pictures of how the port used to be.

Good question here- Why is the Blue Anchor pub so called??

"The Blue Anchor in Aberthaw was the 2007 Daily Telegraph Cask Ale pub of the Year.

Est 1380, the name of the Inn was derived from the name of the bay at Aberthaw, the distinctive blue marl(mud) which coated the anchors of the vessels that called at the port giving the name to both the bay and the Inn."

...but the bay is on the Somerset side of the Channel /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I love a challenge on the quiet night watch, Tony /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Next question - there are few shelters along the exposed southern coast of the BC, and some of the harbour entrances are inadvisable in heavy weather. However I "discovered" a superb anchorage last year with pretty good shelter, and certainly a lot better than the more well-known one nearby. The inshore passage is quite spectacular inside the island which is known as....????

Give that man a cigar! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It seems quite a sheltered anchorage there, with a couple of small bays close under Pentire Head. You can anchor quite close in, in good sand, and it looks like it would be good if the wind was E - NW. Better than Padstow entrance, and looks like a good passage stopover.

Anyone familiar with the place??

Assuming you mean me, many thanks.

I only know the place from the land. The Rumps Point coastline is rather distinctive.
