A friend of mine picked up fuel from Brighton marina in early June, and has been plagued with the bug. There was no sign of the bug before refueling.
has anyone else had problems.

Use MR16, add to the fuel and it should deal with it. I always use it now as a preventive measure after getting 'bug' on the filters several years ago. And I always use road diesel instead of marina red(my boatyard only sells red to the fishermen due to 'paperwork'!) And of course it has frequent turnover. And it's cheaper than red, but of a faff getting it to my mooring though.

It is highly unlikely supplier has caused contamination. Possibly there was some water in fuel if it is a low turn over facility. More likely is that bug contamination occured in boat fuel tank. Clean tank drain water add anti bacterial fuel additive. ol'will

Yes.. Not necessarily Brighton. But have picked up bad fuel in the past in Weymouth. Brighton possibly. Dover. And just outside Dorchester in my 2.8 capri ??... I also used to install fuel installation
systems for the aviation industry.. And service.... You don't want to know believe me ????.

In the 2.8 Capri .... that would have been Gasoline ?
I was a Capri owner (no I did not come from Essex !) .... 1.6L Mk 2 .... then a JPS 2.0S (the gold lined black Mk2) - which I ended up club racing ,,,, then the 2.8i Special with LSD (which suffered faulty drive shaft where wheel came off near Shoreham - Ford disavowed claim) which I repaired and sold .... replaced with 2.8i without LSD - faster and actually better than the LSD version as it no longer 'tramped' in corners etc.

Anyway back to fuel.

Terminal storage do not like public to know that quite often the tanks have 'dead bug' laying in the bottom. I've dipped tanks around the world and not unusual to find 5 ... 10 ... 20cms or more on bottom of tanks ....

Second that the bug problem is mainly a middle distillate matter that we see as consumers - ie Gas Oil / Diesel. But in fact it can affect ALL petroleum fractions. It is extremely difficult to determine the actual source when you find contamination. The only matter you can be sure of - you now need to treat your tanks.
I use any Enzyme based treatment - this breaks up the crud such that it can pass through and be burnt in the engine. In 20 odd years of present boat ownership - I have only emptied and syphoned out bottom of my tank once. Fuel was filtered / dosed and put back.
