Help!!

I have just updated the radio on my boat with an Icom M441 radio. The instructions are as clear as mud when it comes to connecting it to a GPS. Basically I want to connect it into an existing MLR312 GPS. There is a wire with no end on the radio and I cannot see any spare wires on the GPS. Can anyone tell me how I interface them please (Simply)

are you sure there's no spare wires or an accessory lead with the GPS? If I remember correctly, it's usually a green wire on the radio and a blue on the GPS that you connect together.. NMEA data out on the GPS and NMEA data in on the radio.

The radio has a 2 wire input just like a speaker wire, 1 will have a trace ie white stripe, thats the plus in wire, the outher is the negative in.

You will have to look up your gps book for the nmea out wires, some gps systems go to a data box so you may need to fins that and take 2 wires from that to your radio, there are so many different combinations I cant possibly help you out totally, but thats the easiest way to get nmea/latlong etc to your radio.

Icom manuals available for download Here

(Still no 'M441' though...)

The Icom 421 etc had a phono connection for the nmea(like hifi) so just need to connect data out from the GPS and your manual will show which...the centre connection is data and the outside shield is signal negative.

Still stuck!!!

Please see this imageView attachment 2728

If the image has appeared(!!??) you will see that ther does not appear to be any spare connection to connect the radio to it. Has anyone any advice they can give me please??

Looks to me like the cable on the left would be to the GPS aerial, and the one on the right is a multi-pin connector that probably has power as well as NMEA.

This manual was the only thing I could find and it suggests that NMEA would be available on that multi-pin connector on the Yellow and Brown/Orange cables.

So in your case, I'd try connecting the Yellow cable to the centre strand of your radio's NMEA cable, and the Orange/Brown to the shield of that same cable.

But don't sue me if I'm wrong....

Sorry to be thick, but do you mean cut into the cable, find the wires and then use a simple connector block each end - or something more comprehensive?
Sue you - No Chance!! I am just happy of the help. I have got the English version of the manual which makes as much sense to me as the Dutch version shown in the manual!!!

I wouldn't cut into the cable in the middle - but trace it away from the GPS to find the end. Ideally you'd find the cable, with the power hooked up, and the other cables neatly tidied. You may find that someone has trimmed them off, in which case you may need to strip the insulation back a bit to expose them.

Agree with Rick. On mine, if you trace the cable back, you should find some unused leads. 1 of these will be the NMEA out of the GPS. Needs to hook up to the NMEA in on the radio. Simples...............
