I will be wanting to download a zipped file. What (free) program should I be installing to unzip it.

Re: Computing question re zipped files

if you're using windows xp then zip compression/expansion is built into the operating system.

Vista has a zip/unzip facility built in but there are issues - it takes ages to unzip large archives and sometimes fails. With smaller archives I find the easiest thing is often to double-click the file then copy the revealed contents to a new folder - this works better in most cases than using the 'extract' command.

7zip is incredibly quick even with very large archives, free and utterly trouble free, but if you want to listen to the random ramblings of people who use a different operating system then that is fine as well.

Thanks all. Now I have looked at "Help" of course I discover Vista is supposed to unzip them.

Only one to do I think so ill try the inbuilt option first. If It wont do the job then it 'll be back to one of the recommendations.

The one built into XP is awful - slow and occasionally crashes, once you've used 7zip there's no going back.
