Dear technically minded,

I apologise for posting something not related to boating but am at my wits end! My computer has been infected with the W32sobig@mm virus, I have tracked down the file to winmgm32.exe but neither Mc afee or norton can remove it as they claim it is running. Any advise/suggestions or comments will be greatfully received before i finally lose the plot and float test the Bl**dy thing!

Go to the Norton or McAffee websites and look for specific instructions as to how to remove it.
You may need to detect and delete files at DOS level. Assuming you have a legit virus checker, call their helpline for advice (McAffee were very helpful to me recently).
Also, not a good idea to have two different antivirus progs on PC as they can conflict with each other just by being there (so I am told......)

this could be "suck eggs" time, but i seem to remember that the file winmgm32.exe is part of the operating system under DOS, removing it or modifying it causes the interupts to crash the system, don't know how acurate that is.. but working from my memory is always gonna be dodgey!

hope you sort it, regards, steve.

Most of the major Anti Virus Software companies produce .exe (self executing) files to remove certain viruses which cannot be removed from windows. The usual procedure is to go to the web site of the virus software you use and search for the virus name. Normally you will then be able to download an .exe file which can be made into a bootable floppy disk. You then set your PC to boot from drive A:\ with the bootable disk and it will execute and remove your virus.

When it has run, reboot your PC into Windows and voila! no virus. If the virus is preventing your PC from Starting you will have to download and make the virus removal disk on another PC, then use it to boot the infected PC.

Have used this on a few machines over the years and have always successfully removed the virus.
