Compost toilets

William
I have a traditional head installed complete with macerator/holding tank/pump out system. The toilet i want is for the aft cabin.

"Could even have several buckets available." Geeez! ??
Do as I did and put in a porta potty, the ordinary one holds enough for two days for me and the boss. Good for on the hard where we are now, good for marinas as well. Empty in the yard or marina standard bog. In the appropriate place we use the sea flush one.

The simple way of GRP moulding is to lay resin and cloth onto a flat surface, Melamine chipboard for example, then trim it to size and tape it to the other bits. Having built the box with the smooth side in, add a few extra layers in the outside for strength. A bearing only needs to be a bit of tube clued to the wall of the box. Unlike a Porta Potty, the contents do not slop and gurgle....

One other solution to the holding tank for temp use while in harbour is to have a Porta Potty with a hose connection and bilge pump to a skin fitting. After clearing harbour, just pump the contents out. Would work for a few days.
The two days worth is a comfortable lift and carry. Easy to take the receiver off and empty it

Why do the devotees insist on calling them "composting" toilets. The original concept is to take the waste from such toilets and form compost heaps in gardens to break it down and spread it. The composting process can take anything from three months to a year and is an excellent idea.

When used on boats, the waste should be stored in composting containers and kept on the boat for months or taken ashore to be composted somewhere. It started off as a green solution for land people but, on boats, green it is not and "composting" toilets they are not.

Why not call them "2 Bucket" toilets where one bucket collects urine which is thrown overboard and the other bucket collects crap which is emptied into marina waste bins which the rest of us have to use. A disgusting practice which is a health hazard and should be banned by law.

And by extension therefore, so should binning nappies and dog waste... If binned responsibly, adequately bagged/wrapped and placed in a regularly emptied bin with a lid, it surely poses little risk. And it can of course also be taken home (perhaps only once or twice a season) and allowed to continue composting (not '2 bucketing'!) as intended!

What can arguably be more disgusting in practice is the mess left by some less-than-careful individuals after emptying of a chemical toilet cassette into a standard toilet!

Why would it be worse than the bacon rinds, left over kebabs and empty dairy packages, from whence the crap first came? Could that be banned by law too?

Having experimented with humanure in my garden, humanity's been doing it for as long as we've be agriculturing, it really doesn't smell once it's dried out. Which is the point of the separation & sawdust in the commerical or self-build ones. I'd far rather have one than a chemical one, in case you've never seen one of them tip out.

And where do they get dumped.

Given that you only have to empty the "compost" toilet every 3/4 weeks why not store the sawdust/poo in a plastic bag in the bilge until you are able to dispose of it at sea? (The plastic bag would have to be bio-degradable)

I don't think you could do that, at least on a current design, because of the shit-stirring crank contraption.

You could of course have a box with a seat on top that takes sealable bags which you later throw in a bin, but it barely qualifies as a toilet system by that point ;)

Pete
Actually that gets right back to the reason I posted the thread.

Apparently there are two types:
  • one with a plastic bag and no stirrer and
  • one with no bag and a stirrer
I'd be more comfortable with the shit-stirrer type ?

Because human faeces carry human diseases which other people shouldn't be exposed to.
But yet you'll go swimming in the sea, or share public swimming baths that have to be checked for fecal counts? Where do you think seabirds and fish poops?

Have you studied how many diseases and pathogens are in cooked meat?

I don't know how long the likes survive in a dry compost scenario. I mean, we're not talking about hot, steaming piles like at Glastonbury Festival here.

I'd have guessed the manufacturers would have investigated this.

In the old days, farmers actually used to compete to pay passing armies to dump in their fields such was its value. Right up until Victorian times both number ones and two were tradeable commodities. Speaking as a someone who aspires to be a professional shit-stirrer, taking the piss used to a highly profitable business.

Yep! I've got a mate (Harold) in the UK who used to watch the delivery horse to see if it pooped. Apparently it was a race to see who could get it first.

If two people can use a "compost toilet" for 3/4 weeks before needing to be emptied then surely disposing of the sawdust/poo is not a big problem?

How long are you going to spend at anchor in a popular anchorage or in a marina before heading out to sea? As I said before, why not empty the toilet contents into a bio-degradable plastic bag for later disposal at sea?

SWMBO's grandfather used to do the same when the milkman's horse would go while eating the leaves from the tree in his front garden This was in south London not in a rural area.

Exactly - if I were a fan of marina dumpster diving I’d be more worried about baby’s nappies, someone’s covid snot rags, used prophylactics, or worse! It’s landfill waste. It’s supposed to be full of bacteria. So long as it’s bagged appropriately, what’s the problem? Some dried out poop in coir fibre would be among the nicer things you’d find.

How do you dispose of compost toilet waste?
Here are some places you should be able to empty the urine bottle from your composting toilet: At a dumping station. This is a sure place for safe disposal.
...
Here are places for dumping solid waste:
  1. In the compost pile at a park or campground. One is typically available.
  2. In a trash receptacle. ...
  3. Burying.

The urine waste could be put into a solar still to convert it back to drinking water. ;)

The solid waste could be used for a campfire on the beach. Burning dried Elephant dung makes a very good mosquito repellent. ;)
