I remembered reading about this last year (poss. a thread by Nostrodamus). Now I've had first hand experience of an overly complex charging system for a short stay in a marina.

1) Daily rate plus standing charges for water and electricity (all of these vary with length).
2) Water and electricity usage m3 and kWh
3) Everything quoted ex. tax and so you need to add IVA, T5 and buoyage

I was given a list of their charges apart from T5 and told it was just a small amount. However, I had a good idea what to expect for T5 though it's difficult to find the calculation. At least I rembered Nostro's thread and looked at the charges in detail. When I checked out today they managed to produce an amount within 2 Euro of my expected bill and there were about 6 people in a queue behind me. Only just had time to look at the bill and it's a real mess.

On -ve side:
I was charged for a 15 x 6 m boat instead of 13 x 5.5m shown in their printed tarrif.
No mention of this when I booked in and asked for their rates. I was just told to look at the booklet to get the correct rate.

Water usage rounded up from 0.4m3 to 1m3 (not actually a surprise as I suspected they'd do that).

T5 tax added before IVA and then IVA calc'd for T5 tax (so a tax has IVA added).
I did ask if they would charge IVA on the T5 tax element and was told they didn't.
Yes they do, the bill is totalled and then IVA calc'd at the end.

On +ve side:
I was only charged berthing and T5 for 15 nights instead of 16. Oddly, they managed to charge water standing charge correctly (though it had 21% IVA vs. 10% for m3 used).

I wasn't charged for electricity at all, no standing charge and no kWh used.

They really are making life difficult for themselves with such a complicated system and I imagine they get it wrong more often than they get it right.

So watch out in La Linea, I was lucky as the errors pretty much cancelled out.

we were there in March and the place was virtually empty - the big windows for the showers had vynl graphics stuck on them to give some privacy in the changing area, some of it had been picked off and numerous times my better half saw pervs standing at the window of the female changing rooms, not much to do near by either , pontoons covered in bird **** and staff staff sat in the office all day long , we walked to Gib most of the time, shame as potentially its a nice marina.

"They really are making life difficult for themselves with such a complicated system"

From what you have written, it seems like it was difficult for you, not the marina. On your next visit to the area you could try Gibraltar where at least you won't have to be worried by the tax calculation.

I just emailed them in advance and asked for a quote based on my length and width, they quoted and when I left they tried to charge more and I showed them their email - they immediately apologised and billed exactly as the quote :)

Can we cut to the chase... how big is your boat and how much did it cost ?

We have had them as neighbours for centuries.....you...have only just arrived and suddenly you are an expert on everything.....:D:rolleyes:

WOW- you must be very old VO5!

You are also prone to sweeping generalisations-I met many Spanish last winter who were busy, skilled and dilligent artisans. Most were charming and polite too.

Of course not all Spaniards are like that-nor all other races.

People of all nations share flaws, strengths and weaknesses.

Anglo Saxon stock holds no high ground here......................................

From an earlier thread, posting by VO5:
"Gibraltar was taken by General Rooke in 1704 with a detachment of marines.

In 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht was signed between Britain and Spain granting Gibraltar to Britain in perpetuity. This treaty was agreed in conjunction with Minorca (then a British possession) being ceded to Spain.

But shortly after it became obvious that the Spaniards were not going to respect the treaty they had just signed and that they were planning to lay siege to Gibraltar.

The then military governor knew how many troops he had under his command but not a clear idea of how many civilians there were at that time. So he organised a census.
He decreed that those who could not afford to buy provisions for six months or who did not physically have those provisions had to leave the fortress.

My family were allowed to stay together with some seventy other families or individuals.

We have been here ever since and have suffered a total of 13 sieges. Our origins are not Spanish by the way. We are of Hungarian descent and originally from Livorno (Leghorn), in Italy."

I suspect it would not be worth getting drawn into a debate on the subject.

John Masters book "The Rock", based on fact but with fictional passages is an entertaining read. It throws light on much that has been lost in history.

Gibraltar is a unique place and has-or had- significant strategic value.

My father refuelled there on his way to Libia in a Halifax Bomber. Churchill did the same in the Liberator the Septics gave him.

Personally, I dont like it. I would rather be in Spain.

In Masters book-IIRC- he says that when God made the world the nations were asked for what they wanted out of his sack.

When it was the Spanish turn they asked for Political Stability.

God said he did not have that in the sack.

He said "I've got the fastest horses, the most passionate women, the clearest water, the brightest sun.............................."
