Please can we have some intellegent competitions back please?
The current rash of cheap market data gathering lotteries just does not do it for me.
Bring back the old style quizs esp. the pilottage quiz...
Please....

OK then, here's a question........
Single hander, sailing yacht, coasting along on a light onshore breeze Skip needs to make an urgent phone call.
An innocent beach with village visible comes into view
Holding gravel, but wind still light.
He thought, "Right, drop anchor and row ashore, back in no time."
Then problem! Client not available. Ten mins. tea shop and still no luck! It was an hour before he started back aware of trees rustling in strengening on shore breeze
To his horror his yacht was pounding on the steep shingle beach. Her keel grinding.
To his relief he saw a fishing boat making for the scene
He gladly accepted the line and made it fast to his bows
Despite their best efforts he remained pinned to the beach
He thought "If only they could turn the bow seaward, he might be lifted off, but how?"

This is serious, there is no precisely correct answer
Lets have your best answers please....

Regards Briani

option ,
If he can put a line to his mast head , and give this to the fishing boat,
ask him to gently tip the yacht to make her draught shallower, then tighten the bow line and pull gently, this mite get her off. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Pass a line to the fishing boat, then get the main and Genoa up so that the boat heels.

Fishing boat then gently pulls bow seaward

The wind will push the bows on, any attempt to use the engine and rudder will need to push the stern further in before the bow comes out.

Belay the fishing boat's line at the stern and use the engine in astern to help.

Pour loads of oil in the water (increase the surface tension) so the waves don't break, get a friendly MoBo, bigger the better to race past at semi-planing speed to create a big swell. Get the fishing boat to motor like crazy while the boat is lifted on the first crest. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Errrrr, I'm going now!

His anchor is already deployed (to seaward since the wind is blowing towards the shore) so he could use his windlass (until it burns out) too haul himself off.

Lash line to aft cleat, round bow and attach to trawler, trawler pulls line which pulls yacht around and eventually pulls yacht backward off the beach.

Otherwise call insurance go back to pub...

Disagree. If the anchor has already dragged, there's not a lot of chance of getting it to pull the bows off. even if it is clear of rubbish the scope will be so short by the time it bites that it will do no good. Hauling on the rode will potentially bring it in range of the trawler's prop, then you'll both be on the beach! I think the bit about "getting the bows off" in the question is misleading, Stern first is best and the anchor will hinder that. The best it could do is stop the bows swinging in as you pull the stern.

You could ask the trawler to take it out further for you but the pull you could exert with your windlass is going to be less than the trawler can do with her engine.

It's doesn't say anything about the anchor dragging? I assumed that the tide went out (but it doesn't say that either)
