I am upgrading the sounder from an old seafarer 700 set with repeater to a nasa type sounder (probably clipper range) can the old transducer be used in the new set? I think it is a coax type plug, has anyone any detailed experience?

thanks

It won't work. I recently tried exactly this with a Clipper as the replacement. The new transducer will be supplied with the new unit of course - I guess you are trying to avoid a haul out until it suits you. A few years ago I tried the same thing with a similar unit(not sure if it was a seafarer now), going to a nasa target - also no good.

My previous boat - I did exactly as OP asks about and all worked fine.
On present boat I changed Seafarer to Echopilot Duo - also no problem - works fine.

Considering that both co's are most likely supplied trnaducers from Airmar and are of same frequency, same lead length, same plug - why should they not work ?

To OP ... you will get the transducer with new set anyway - so try old one ... if no good then you'll have new one to replace with anyway. But as long as old was working - there shouldn't be problem.

[/ QUOTE ] No Nigel I think you will find it costs an extra £25 . You of all people not spotting a potential saving of a whole 25 smackers. Losing your grip. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nasa did at one time advertise the fact that their sounders would work with existing Seafarer transducers. In those days presumably to help entice people away from Seafarer.

Blimey - that's outrageous !! I apologise that I was not aware of this - all adverts etc. I looked at - particularly on Ebay all had Transducers included !

No you are right it was me misreading Nasa's website. they are supplied with transducer (it says in tiny print) They misleadingly then list the transducer along with a few other things as "related products" I assumed it meant you could buy the instrument without the transducer and save £25.

As you say then no point in using the old one. Might as well stick the new one in unless you're afloat and it's a through hull installation.
