I have a Rigel Poseidon Compass Model No 1610 and the dome has been cracked. The crack is star shaped. It leaks only when the temperature rises. Any help on how to repair the crack, or where to obtain a replacement dome would be apreciated. What is the fluid?.

Could try Capt. Tolly's Creeping Crack Cure. Thin liquid, gets into cracks by capilliary action, and sets to a transparent flexible seal. Available in chandlers.

The fluid could be one of several

I also have a Rigel Poseidon. Spare parts are now unobtainable. I've topped up with Sestrel's Bayol 35 compass oil (thank you, Pugwash, who kindly gave me some), which seems compatible with the original. Alternatively you might try SIRS Navigation, who specialise in compass repair, and who know this compass.

Incidentally, there was a second hand one for sale in the Bursledon barge when I visited a couple of months ago.

I had a similar problem on a plastimo compass it leaked after i overtightened the fluid drain screw which was weeping. To get a good repair it is essential to drain down all the fluid and remove all traces of the fluid, I used first white spirit drained then biological soap powder left for a couple of hours. This also cleaned a fine scum from the inside surface. Then wash it out with clean water, distilled as a final wash if you have some available. Then dry it by using a gentle flow of air, a fish pump airator does the job. Drying may take several hours, but do not be tempted to use acetone to remove water as you will dissolve the plastic. I used superglue on the crack which dries within the hour. The fluid was filtered before putting it back in to remove a slight cloudyness. The result was a crystal clear view of the compass card and no more leaks.

Have fun!
