Community boat Building and Rowing in N.E.

I have been heavily invovled in the growth of coastal rowing that has been ongoing in Scotland over the last 18 months. A design was adopted which communities can build for themselves from a kit, and then row in teams of four rowers and a coxswain in races against other communities.

If anyone is in the North East of England, and would like to get invovled in a similar rewarding activity, south of the current border, they might want to pop along to a meeting in Newcastle on the 10th of November:

Sad to see no response to this. I'm involved with building our first St Ayles skiff here on Seil. It's a fantastic community project.

We glued the last bit of the hull (outer gunwale) today - the next job is to get the boat ready for the painting team. We are hoping to launch in early Spring and we are having an open day / regatta on the 1st/2nd June - rowing, ceilidh and craic.

Good job, Nick. There's a Skiff up in Stornoway as well but I must admit I asked where the outboard bracket was supposed to go, and haven't been too involved since then...

Celtic Gigs & longboats are popular in the SW, Eire & Welsh coasts, we have had 2 at the Royal Welsh for some time & are just buying a few more. There is an annual race across the Irish Sea in them, so not just rowing in sheltered water. Mostly bought rather than built & GRP construction, but still popular for sea rowing.

A boat is being built in North Norfolk and Kings Lynn are hoping to build two skiffs. We are nearly up to 100 kits out there, which is quite a start in under 3 years. The next launch will be the Portsoy skiffettes, the first all female build in the UK. 2 March at Portsoy Harbour, near Banff.
