I agree about the motoring part. I have a boat which is very good upwind but it is sometimes frustrating: you are with kids who want a swim and you want to get to your destination before it's too late. I have no hesitation in turning on the engine and taking advantage of the beach - and watching the purists creeping into the anchorage in the dark.
As far as second hand boat shows are concerned the "Mille Sabords" in Le Crouesty at the end of October is one of the largest. Hundreds of boats and probably at rates considerably cheaper than in the UK.
