Coming over to the 'Dark Side'

Re: Coming over to the \'Dark Side\'

I agree about the motoring part. I have a boat which is very good upwind but it is sometimes frustrating: you are with kids who want a swim and you want to get to your destination before it's too late. I have no hesitation in turning on the engine and taking advantage of the beach - and watching the purists creeping into the anchorage in the dark.

As far as second hand boat shows are concerned the "Mille Sabords" in Le Crouesty at the end of October is one of the largest. Hundreds of boats and probably at rates considerably cheaper than in the UK.

Re: Coming over to the \'Dark Side\'

You might get a Westerly 33 needing a bit of TLC at the top end of your budget, they had centre cockpits and mostly ketch rigs though some were sloops. A later aft cockpit version is called the Discus which was a sloop. All varieties were available in fin or bilge keel versions (fin very much the better unless you really need to dry out or need a slight less draft of 4ft instead of 5'6") These were mostly fitted with Mercedes OM636 42HP diesels though we replaced ours with a Perkins made Volvo MD22L 50HP, either way on a 33ft boat there was plenty of power available AND they sail well, several have gone round the world and one is documented at surviving a hurricane. We kept ours for 14 years and would have taken her anywhere.

Re: Westerly 33

If you haven't done already have a look at the Westerly Owners website

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.westerly-owners.co.uk>http://www.westerly-owners.co.uk</A>

There is one there at £27,950 asking price, I do know one was sold near us for that too, it just depends on being in the right place at the right time! We sold ours for quite a bit more BUT she had everything already fitted/done and most was new or nearly new (engine, sails, rigging, upholstery, epoxy bottom, cockpit canopy, etc).

They sail well, are good heavy weather boats and can motor with the best if needed.
