Hi folkes, whilst in beautiful Lymington at the weekend there were a pair of Targa 38's moored up on the quay. One had a genny, and one had a bigger Genny!

I thought to myself that the answer to my problems regarding battery charging, kettles, hair straightners, t.v, etc etc, whils enjoying some nice overnight anchorages around and about.

Very nice owner of big Genny, says his 2kw Honda, does the trick! At risk of being thick (AGAIN), will this power a fridge, tv and charge batteries? If yes where are they available at the right price?

The next question is a real issue of creature comforts, and the 'Capitaines' bed is not comfy in our Fairline, and Im wondering who may be worth a shout around the Hayling area, who could solve the problem of an uncomfy nights sleep, with either a bespoke sprung matress of a memory foam jobbie? Any advice will be gratefully received.

We get on great with the little honda, dosn't make much noise, but we send it down the other end of the pontoon, if no one else around. Keeps the batterys topped up for the heating in winter and runs the telly. Just wont run the hot water as well.
 
I saw the same two .....

I know there isn't elec on the town quay pontoon there, but you have to ask yourself - is it really necessary to run a genny? Admittedly we weren't there long as we arrived by land so don't know how long they had been running .... but if we were onboard and tied up near them the noise could be considered irritating after a short while .... especially with both running!

Sound travels really well over the water - so if you're gonna run one in an anchorage, please bear in mind the others anchored in the same area might not appreciate them as much as you do! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Those honda gennies are the dogs bits, I borrowed a 2kw one for a few weeks whilst repairing big genny, quiet, economical and did my batteries and run the telly etc. On a swim platform they are quiet enough at anchor, as long as you dont run them at night, with other folk around. Would run hairdryer, straigteners etc, but not all the stuff at the same time, have to be careful.
 
I agree, Had a kippor for three years whilst saved up for Honda. Bought it in November 2007...Sold boat January 2008! Now surplus to requirements! They really are a special piece of kit.

Hi Jason

We put a proper memory foam mattress in our T37 and it was a huge improvement. It was as simple as buying a proper 5' memory foam mattress from one of the bed sheds, and then cutting it to shape. Piece of cake really and definitely worth the £600 or so that the mattress cost.

Mind you - I think Wiggo on here did something similar not long ago, only with a sprung mattress. So - go to it!

Danny Howard of Maritime Upholstery (in Plymouth) has just completely re-upholstered and re-carpeted my boat and done a cracking job. he's also making a new memory foam mattress.

He also made a custom memory foam mattress for a yotty friend of mine and it has made a real difference to their night-time comfort!

I would definitely recommend memory foam!

This was my dilemma when I came across a secondhand 3.5 zeise set 2 years back, do i sell it on or fit it into my corniche? reason 1, corniche is a stern heavy boat so more in the back and the bows in the sky.

At this time i had the engines out as i was doing a full refurb and new tanks, so it went in but it went in at the front of the stb engine, that bit of extra forward weight made all the difference, most corniche tri cabs list to port due to the galley, inside helm and toilet all on that side, the genny did help to balance the boat too.

Now this little gem came into its own, i love Lymington and it always seems busy at the marinas so its always been the town for us, either between 2 buoys or on the pontoons we were there for 3 nights once we had tv from the inverter and hot water for a shower on board, so the debate rises, but yes I would invest in another. That is when I invest in another boat!.
 
Thanks guys, I have requested a price for the spare genny???

The gennies running on the quay, werent to intrusive to others I would have thought, but as you say used with consideration to others at anchorage shouldnt cause too many problems.

You might have considered to put some extra battery's,
and a big 12Vdc to 230V AC invertor like Victron f.e.(up til 3.5kw or a multiple in cascade ) and a bigger alternator on the boat engine.
If you still want a quite geni, have a look at "Fisher Panda", we put them in broadcast OB-Vans, they MUST be silent
