Comfort in the Cockpit

I have tried various options for cockpit cushions with mixed results.

When short tacking they tend to fly about and get in the way. I have tried longer types of buoyancy cushions but they are rather uncomfortable, and dangerous when stepping on them. Permanent type cushions are difficult due to access requirements in lockers.

I thought of trying conventional cushions but sticking that non slip material on them.

I would welcome any ideas.

Regards

I've put velco pads on them for people before. They stay in place when you want them to and remove easily for stowage when you don't. Could be a way round it for you.

On short trips I use cheapie inflatable cushions made from rubberised cotton. A bit bouncy but save the bum and stow well.
On longer trips I have an old pvc covered cushion made to fit the length of the cockpit seat this seems to "stick" to the boards in the cockpit and it doubles up as a side cushion in one of the single berths. Trouble is this soaks up water so on wet days I stow it and stand up more.

Bean bags in sealed rubber cushion with removable canvas covers are the best. They mould around seats and tend to stay put. you have to make them yourself natch
but i once went on a boat with these and they were brill. esp for a long stint on the helm you could drape it over the coaming.
with the canvass cover off they looked very similar to a giant hot water bottle
i think the rubber was glued together with a strip over the join.

Ok brain let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

posted on this subject a while back.SWMBO made our new cushions out of high density reticulated foam covered on top with sunbrella and the bottoms done in a plasticised nylon mesh. Reticulated foam does not absorb water in fact it is also used as a filtration material so don't throw away the scraps. If they get rained on the water just goes straight through. If they get dirty just give em a squirt of washing up liquid and hose em down. The down side? They dont float!

How about doing it the other way around - attach cushion to under-upholstered arse.
I've found a piece of sleeping mat foam (as sold by camping shops for teenage sleepovers) with three tapes to be absolutely ideal - and you can use them ashore for those interminable beach barbeques.

Just stick a big wedge of 4" foam down the back of your foulies. Makes you look like you've got a big arse but v comfortable, v cheap, you can still move around and if you've had a curry the night before provides good central heating when you let 1 off!

I bought 1 plastic shower curtain and four ceap pillows from Argos. Combined with a sowing machine you have 4 cushoins for £5. To keep em in place I use velcro. They are so cheap I don't really mind losing one over the side every now and then.

Cheap and cheerful ....

2 things needed ...... a) soft seat cushions / covers for folding garden chairs .... about 6 quid a set ? b) self-adhesive velcro strip, enough for about 8 patches 2-3 inch each.

Stick the soft brush style velcro patch to clean surface on cockpit side where cushion should be, plus another on the seat. Stick and stitch corner of other velcro patches on seat cushion.

Do this in each place you want the comfy cushion.

Voila .... soft seats, that don't fly away.

If you have cockpit cushioning that runs the length of the cockpit benches like I have .... fix velcro at ends to keep it in place.......

QED and above all else - cheaper than the Yottie Mortgage jobs available in Chandlers !!!!!

Nigel ...
