Combining PDFs

Help,

I have 6 word.doc files I am trying to combine into one pdf which I have done using "expert pdf editor", all looks fine when read in Adobe Acrobat. But when I put the document on line and open in Firefox the formatting goes to pot and looks a mess, it is fine in Safari on an Ipad and in internet explorer 8 on the PC the problem seem to be in Firefox, I have tried combining the documents in word before converting to pdf but the formatting is even worse, I have tried a different pdf editor. The document is our club "safeguarding" policy created by someone else and I would like to get it right. Am I right to be irritated that Firefox has a pdf reader that doesn't work the same as the industry leader and any help to solve the formatting world be appreciated.

Combine the word docs first into one document. Check your formatting.

Then make the PDF.

Check the formatting and page options in your chosen PDF maker. Cute PDF is free and quite good.

Not IMHO: you're using a 3rd party program to convert one proprietary format to another proprietary format and expecting an open source browser to render it correctly. Convert it to html which is what the web was designed for and no browser has an excuse to get wrong. It will also be more friendly to people viewing the info over limited bandwidth links from their boats.

I don't use Adobe Reader at all, my (free) pdf reader is from Foxit (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/). Your doc displays perfectly stand-alone in Foxit Reader and also in Chrome using the Foxit plugin.

I would check what pdf reader plugin you are using in Firefox, it may be corrupted in some way. If it's Adobe then try reinstalling it being sure to include the Mozilla plugin. AFAIK Firefox has no built-in pdf reader - you must install a plugin, so if it's not working properly it's the plugin that's at fault not Firefox.

The problem is with the built in reader in Firefox not the adobe plug in, I know the fault is not just in my copy since we have tried it on a different computer, I was also aware it appears OK in all the other software I have tested, many thanks for the suggestions.

I seem to have solved it by uploading the file outside Wordpress and putting a link in, http://www.christchurchsailingclub.co.uk/Files/CSC_Safeguarding_Policy_2013.pdf

Seems a bit weird to me but it works, thanks for the suggestions and offers of help.

I've been cue'd that the excellent and 'industry-leading' Foxit PDF Reader is now available for free download here:

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/

It includes a range of very useful advances on V.5, certain of which would seem to resolve the OP's issue.

Firefox has had a built in PDF reader for the last version or two, since about 19 I think. Its not actually very good yet, it probably reads 60-70% of PDF docs well. The rest of the time you have to download the doc and use Adobe or Foxit (but even that very occasionally has a problem but usually only with editable docs)

I've read a bit more about the Firefox pdf browser which I understand is written in Java. I still think it is odd to release an update which is presumably meant to make the browser more user friendly by not needing an additional reader to open pdf's, but in fact only works maybe 3/4s of the time, I suppose I should regard it as a work in progress but I suspect it **** off many users.

Looks OK to me in Acrobat Reader X, why would anyone use anything else? PDF in browser is naff.

Yes, fine in Firefox, with Acrobat plug-in disabled. But surely almost everyone has Acrobat installed, so why worry about it?
