Another useful step is ensuring fuel is the cleanest possible before putting it into the tank. I only fill my main tank through portable cans (jerricans?), it's only max 100-200 liters at a time, I use this type of funnel which has proved very good. That water and nasty stuff came out of one single jerrycan (which of course was clean before pouring diesel into it 
).
On the very very rare occasions I moor alongside to a filling station, it's funnel again, if there are other boats queuing behind, well, they will have to wait a few minutes longer
