If we have a trolling line out the back are we engaged in fishing and therefore entitled to display the appropriate day shape while terrifying other yachties with bizarre and apparently random manoevres?

Perfectly serious post - the stuff SWMBO chucks out the back definitely restricts our manoevering capabilities - takes half a knot off the boat speed for a start . . .

[/ QUOTE ] erm . . . this is Scuttlebutt . . .

Me, jammy? All me own work Dave, very small boat, very small income, anyone can do it if they have the inclination, you just have to be slightly mad.

Sorry I have not been on the communicator - pinching someone's wifi connection here and it is usually dead slow - it's just having a temporary sprint.

Here's a 'Where Is It?' for you . . .

You know - mustn't grumble . . .

Off to Gran Canaria tomorrow night for a few days in Puerto Mogan -should have a decent wifi connection there. We have rented the house out for another six months, so we can afford the marina fees again!

Don't tell me they've banned grumbling too now ,,,,,,,, and that far out too ,, they do seem to have sweeping powers these days ,,,,,,,,,, I'll keep the universal communicator on as much as I can ,,,,, enjoy the weather while you can

Meanwhile, back at the ColRegs....

Answer No.

Rule 3 (d) The term "vessel engaged in fishing" means any vessel fishing with nets, lines, trawls or other fishing apparatus which restrict manoeuvrability, but does not include a vessel fishing with trolling lines or other fishing apparatus which do not restrict manoeuvrability.

Doesn't stop people trying it on though.... I was in a survey ship a few years back, on task, RAM shapes up cos we had to maintain a course over the ground to within +/- 10 metres. Yachtie motoring up on port bow, with his fishing line out the back, gets very irate with us on VHF because "we impeded a fishing vessel".

Prudence got the better of him before he started picking a fight with a 3000 ton steel ship....
