I saw this over the weekend and I thought it a great idea.
I assume he has this colour system to help his wife get the right ones on the right side brilliant , must save loads of time trying to work out which one goes where :)

I didbn't know fenders had a right side and wrong side - what's the difference between a port side fender and a starboard side fender?

Nothing to do with port and starboard, as Paul says, it depends which side you tie up, more about the right side and the other side.

If half the blue ones had black ropes and half shorter white it would be even better , black to the front (higher freeboard) and white rope blue to the back :)

There's a lot more to stinkers than keeping to the right and giving in to raggies ;)
