Did anyone else see the collision between the incoming tanker and the Racing Yacht (we think it might have been Atalanta) in the Solent today? Does anyone know if everybody is ok? Appeared that the Kite caught caught in the Anchor of the ship - it then disappeared from our view - but we saw it pop out at the other end minus the mast.

Really do hope all onboard are ok.

Well, I hope they are all ok but . . .

. . . why would anyone want to go even within 100mtrs of a ship with the spinnaker up?:confused: Do these guys have a death wish? Or were they all blind or simply not looking?

They were RACING. A situation in which all reasonable thought may go missing.

Dedends on the size of the ship and the exact location but if over 150 m and within the charted "area of concern " there is an exclusion zone of 1000 m ahead and 100m either side.

Whenever possible such vessels are escorted.

@ Searush - they were very very close and when they realised they had got it wrong tried to spill the wind from their sails (inc. spinnaker) they should have gyped away

@VicS the tanker was close to or over 150m, it was being escorted and had a tug on her stern.

We were a bit busy!! but the escort boat appeared to be speaking to them before sensibly getting out of the way! before coming back to help.

Really no need for it - I feel the most sorry for the Pilot / Captain who will probably now face a enquiry through no fault of their own.

Crossing from Priory Bay to Chi this pm, I passed it coming up the ship channel: definitely 150m+ with tug escort to assist it on the turn inot Soton water off Cowes, so very definitely a moving no go zone ahead of it - particularly Cowes week!

We were off Lepe and heard 2 almost simultaneous maydays for the MOB and it would seem they were picked up very quickly by a RIB. The mayday was stood down within minutes. The ship was most certainly in the area of concern and I could see the tug astern but couldn't see the escort boat.
