I'm petitioning the editors of our wonderfuel magazines to refrain from misuse of the word "collision".

A boat that hits a rock or a jetty or other immoveable object, does not collide with the object. Collision takes place between moving objects, such as two boats.

When a boat hits a stationary object, the proper word - it seems - is allision

(It's amazing what happens when you pick up a dictionary and look for "allusion", isn't it?)

Yes but more and more I am realising that to talk of "proper use of words" is just wishful thinking. The language seems to be mutating at such a rate that there is no such thing as "Proper". (Also for spelling)
To be pedantic is to simply show your age.
Or to put it another way, if enough people get it wrong enough times it becomes right. ollewill

the mags make lovely overnight sleeper logs when rolled up tightly and stuffed into the stove. Sacrilege, I know, but I am just keeping PBO 1 - 90, for fun reading and nostalgia.

Three supposedly good dictionaries home here, and none show "Allision".

A google search has come up with two good definitions -
"Allision is the act of dashing against or striking upon; it is often used to describe the action of one boat hitting against another, or of the sea dashing against a boat. The word is commonly used in place of "collision" to distinguish that one of the objects was fixed."

a longer one here

The media could start to use the word when a car is in allision with a wall or tree.

Even the spell checker on here doesn't recognise the word!!!!
