I was motoring into Poole on Friday in a 53 ft motor cruiser in the buoyed channel. Approching, coming out of Poole, were several sailing yachts of about 35 ft on the wrong side of the channel, as we closed the leading yacht did a sharp tack not for navigational reasons but simply to re join the following bosts. Indoing so he cut right across my path causing me to stop in order to avoid a collision. No apologies no recognition of poor seamanship. Comments?

Fits in well with a pet theory of mine - the total IQ of the world population is a constant. Population increases rapidly, so what happens to individual's IQ? Right: it drops!
I will collect my Nobel prize later.

Here we go..........again!! (how many will this one get up to, 100+?)........Can we not understand that in all walks of life, mistakes and misjudgements are made?. He probably realised his mistake, tried to get out of your way, and in doing so misjudged the situation and made it worse. Your insinuation seems that it was done on purpose, but with a 20 odd foot size, and considerable weight differential, I doubt it. There's a lot of complete prats out there as well of course, those who know no better, and those who don't give a toss anyway. It seems to be happening so regularly these days, it hardly seems worth reporting anymore - but no, it goes on and on..

By the way, someone actually bumped into me on the pavement the other day - what is life coming to? It's no different than being on the road, where we just have to shrug our shoulders, try to avoid the situation, and get on with it. Perhaps its time those of us on the water did the same.

What are you trying to say? Are you:

a) Claiming that at 53ft you are a large enough vessel "not to be impeded in a narrow channel"?

or

b) Just pissed off that you were obliged to give way to a sailing vessel?

On the road we're taught to drive defensively; to expect the other guy to do the unexpected. Why sould things be any different at sea?

Probably heading across to the ‘Small Ships Channel’ seaward of the chain ferry.
It’s been my experience that when the bridge has opened, few rules apply!
Just sit back, relax, enjoy the ride and don’t get overheated.

Being a sailor is a bit like being on horseback on the highway. If a yacht's under sail, they can do pretty much anything and it'll always be the motorboat skippers fault.

If a car hit's a horse or rider no matter whose fault it is you can bet it's the motorist who gets the blame.

Somewhere in this scenario are dumb animals....I'll let you decide where.

I'm glad I have sails and comprehensive insurance....

Not at all. I am saying that yachtsmen both sail and power should apply the col regs, if they make an error apologise and perhaps if they had been on the correct side of the channel in the first place taht might have been a good start.

Poole Recreational Boat Channels are (1) between port hand buoys & training bank posts up to shell bay & (2) on port hand side after the landing stage of Brownsea Island up to red buoy opposite the 'Diver' Cardinal (No 51).
Agree, many seem to ignore these rules, particularly Power Vessels - but I've always thought they were just be being considerate to slower moving sail boats, due to excessive wash when passing 'en masse' after coming out under the bridge.

Spot the Fallacy!

There is a obvious contradiction in your post.

If you were obeying Colregs then you were obviously keeping as far starboard in the narrow channel as you could safely.

If the sailing boat tacked and crossed in front of you then he had obviously been further to the side of the channel than you considered safe, and must have been tacking back into deeper water.

Now in general a 35ft sailing boat will draw more than a 53ft Motor Cruiser so when you first saw him you must have known that he was sailing in waters that you considered too dangerous for you and would be likely to tack back to deeper water

Sounds like you were happy to go red to red and he wasn't, he turned to starbd, and you did n't. I find that yotties need lots of time, whereas we need lots of space cos we go fast, the two dont mix very well in confined places.

Just hope the drinks did n't get spilt, no harm done just put down to experience.

Have a nice day.
