I think as well that a number of stinkies need to understand that there is also a stand on boat between two mobos, even if one is a raggie without his sails up. And it isn't the smallest one that has to get out of the way whatever.

You only have to look at some of the stinkpots leaving the Folly pontoon on a Sunday afternoon without even a look over their shoulder. It is very much a size thing.

As for collisions between sailing craft, they are rare when not racing - roughly in proportion to the number of mobos that collide when racing.

Think most moboers do, shame some raggies don't .

Only occasionally had that from mobo's, but regularly from raggies.

Rare? can think off at least three non-racing incidents recently, one off which ended up with a yacht sinking.

ps On a recent trip with a ym on his yacht, did not see one raggie under power with his motorsailing cone displayed .

motor sailing cones cancel out a lack of (black) balls amongst power craft at anchor - mainly 'cos they con't have anywhere to hoist them.

the original post didn't give anything like enough information to get judgemental on either the regs, or sensible consideration

whilst there are far to many generalisations I will add one more - sailing craft seem to take dome perverse pleasure in their rights of way (often actually creating situations) - and , mobos seem to object to making alterations to their course.

Our experiences seem to be different.

If the sinking you refer to is Sunsail 47, my information is that at least one of them was racing at the time.

Oh and you do know that we only have to put the cone up if we are sailing as well as motoring don't you?

I think "some" boaters put the same blind faith in being the stand on vessel (right of way) as "some" pedestrians do when stepping onto a Zebra Crossing, they proceed with their "right of way" regardless of the situation/position of the other water/road users.
Vehicles may have to give way to pedestrians on a Zebra crossing but I wouldn't step out in front of a juggernaut in the hope he would stop!!

Simple fact of the matter is that there is little if any action a raggie moving at 5knots compared to the 30+ of a stinkie can do to change any situation. This year I am amazed at the number of 50ft + mobos hurtling about the congested Solent and Southampton waters .. methinks its only a matter of time before there is a very serious incident .. on two occasions at the weekend I was passed within 10 metres by boats of that size up on the plane .. far too close for safety .. I do'nt give a toss about the wash when there's a decent bit of wind though!
