I have a steel motorsailer in the Med that is recently having its teak decks renovated. As it will end up looking golden and clean with new black caulking, I would like to keep it in good condition, and also make it watertight to help prevent problems in the future. I think grey teak looks scruffy.

I have heard about and am considering using Coelan boat coating on the decks, to keep them looking good and sealed. Has any one any opinions on this?

I use coelans on my boat, in Portugal and the meddy, its excellent stuff, I would include the non-slip additive in it for decks, its flexible and good for stoping lekas. I would also lightly sand the sikaflex or whatever before applying the primer, this ensures a good bond, otherwise follow the instuctions to the letter. You must put the right amount of coats on, even if it looks great after two or three, when you mix thinners with it, it takes a lot of stirring to get the thinners in so keep at it and use it in small amounts at a time, washing the brush out every twenty minutes or so to ensure it doesnt go off in the brush, it will, you can count on a brush a day or more, rollers, just throw them away every half hour or before they fall apart! Go for it its wonderful stuff. I haven't used it on my deckks, don't mind grey, or white if you keep them clean and oxalic them now and again, a wash down with salt water seems to help every few days, also helps to keep them swelled.
