Another post has made me ponder on the dreams of Sailing folk quietly making plans....

I have just bought a little yacht (7.47m) after acting upon a childhood dream and, putting myself through 4 years of a rollercoaster life of planning and making drastic changes to my life! . All of which could not be done with outsupport of friends and family!

Now I am here, I plan to cut my teeth in the Solent (and France) for a couple of seasons spending my time exploring creeks and harbours, painting seascapes and the scenery as it unfolds around me.

Then... my cunning plan - as I start my 'World Tour' /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif is to slowly (because she is little) sail around Britain exploring what she has to offer sailing and painting as I go along. then, taking her (I may not be in a position to get another as I shall be saving to travel) through France exploring the canals down to the med and explore there for a while.

I have not quite worked out how I am going to do it yet , I may have a base and come back and return to my boat as & when, I might upsticks completely or I hope get a better offer as I do not want to do it on my own but I will /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But , All we should do in life is 'Live' and make plans but not forget about enjoying 'the moment' as well, to overcome and adapt as we change things or 'stuff' happens to us.

Have you realised your sailing dreams, are you living them now? How far off 'Doing It' are you? - How supportive were you r family and friends ?
As I begin my journey how far through yours are you and how much have your plans changed and if they did was it for better or worse?

This year.......Tenby then on to SW Eire, next year, I quite fancy having a go at that 5/- challenge.

But over the years I have found that plans, at least for me, are a bit like targets..............ya know......

They make a lovely Wooooooooshing sound as they fly clean over me head! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe it will be different this year, I have less that needs my involvement, I do wish you the best of luck, sounds great, but I am one of those folks that prefers more temperate climes, don't do heat.

I did say 'World Tour' /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif in a loose sense of the meaning.
I would love to sail and spend time in the Baltic, but she is a little yacht, and I will have to 'jump ship' for that one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You could sail here over to Holland and then go through the canals? Not much open sea passages to the Baltic then?

Oh, and you could read this
account and get some inspiration. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now hang on a minute Jenku! Since when was Holland in Sweden? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Note to self, do more research about sailing in Holland and possibly the Baltic and how feasible it may be in my little boat ...and maybe add them to my World Cruising list!

p.s Thank you I will read that later, but, I want to do some painting now I am inspired

The story reminds me of a similar tale of a North Sea Crossing in a West wight potter (I have many brunette moments and am not so daft as to undergo that crossing). I wonder if it is the same prson (I will know for sure when i read it) If it is I knew his grandson, there is a book, it is on holiday at my parents (free storage.lol)
I will get it next week and p.m the details to you.

Get on with ya, yours is bigger than mine! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The baltic is well within the capabilities of your Snappy, Here! you could go and pester the crap out of Nigel! Couldn't she Nigel? Eh Nigel? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

HAHA Not at all but if you dread open water and want to go from the UK to Sweden you would go to Holland first, then the canal route northwards, a bit around the Riddle of the Sands part of the coast and then through the Kiel canal. Once in the Baltic you can hug the Danish islands, cross to Sweden (there is even a bridge to follow so no problem to find). Do remember to turn east then otherwise you will eventually emerge into the North Sea again and the only thing you have done is circumnavigate Denmark... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Have you read Shrimpy by Shane Acton - circumnavigated, much of the way with girl friend, in a 18' Mark 1 (marine ply) Caprice and then some! His very first sail!!

thank you, thus far ...notes to ones self,

-Add Holland and the Baltic on world passage plans because Smiffy thinks I'm a yella livered chicken!
-Extend Rsearch Library (eeek - she will sink at this rate!)
-To acquire a 'first Mate' /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I should Either- Jump ship, or - Press Gang an unsuspecting blokey to live in a floating shoebox and tell him he should be gratefull as folk have managed perfectly on an 18ft er /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gifand heres the book to prove it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Makes mental note, watch this one Smiffy, it's gettin' ideas! and it's after dumping the Kings shillin' on some poor sod! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I never said you was a yella livered chicken! Lilly livered perhaps? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I wouldn't be so rash as to say that a Snapdragon will cope with the worst that the North Sea can throw at you, but I wouldn't be worried about choosing with my Snappy 24 (similar, but a few years older than the 747) given a reasonable weather window.

They're surprisingly capable in a blow unless you're trying to go to windward, when you'll need a bit of tide to help in much more than a F5 I reckon that there aren't many places in Europe you couldn't go, but she is a bit on the cosy side for long term cruising

there is a guy out here who has been sailing all over in his 26 footer, UK, West coast africa, south america, caribbean, already done 2 transats in it, blew all concepts of ocean going size I had out of the water,

I don't think I was as rash as that, it's just a bit of ongoing teasing between Marie and me. However, in the right hands (experienced) her Snappy, is capable of crossing the north sea in a blow.

Smaller boats than that have done transats, and transpacs if it comes to it. IMHO, it's all down to experience and preperation.
