My cockpit locker lids supply a hefty whack when falling on arms . I currently have a strawberry bruise about one inch square on my wrist from yesterday.

To save me putting my brain to work , any suggestions for marine proof say locking hinges that work.

Locking hinges seam a hassle to obtain and fit, in my opinion, a lot of effort for someone who does not want to put their brain to work.

Having a similar problem I use a similar solution as above (post 2), except the line is attached to the inside of the lid and when open, in my case, I loop it around a cleat. This is fairly universal (or it used to be) and lines have been looped around guard lines, for example.

bungee loop over winch barrel works well.

current boat has wooden struts, which work well with the heavier lids.

gas struts i am not so sure about - suspect they would rust like a rusty thing? but have not had them on a boat.

Ours are the same. However, it doesn’t matter where the loop, or hook goes. This is the cheapest simplest way. Probably made out of spare stuff carried on board.

Oh, I can do cheaper and simpler than that! Tail of the genoa sheet, from winch, under cockpit locker lid (inverted L shape) and cleated off on the rear (spinnaker) cleat. :D

Do not use springs.
If the boat rolls in a sea one can knock the spring & the thing collapses. That lets the lid down. dangerous in my view. Had it happen a couple of times & that was just a light chart table lid. Hate to get a hit from a large locker in the cockpit etc.
