Cockpit Grating - Plastic ?

This material is available in NZ and i assume similar in the UK. I crewed on a racing yacht with this on cockpit floor and have to say it works really well.
I don't care for the aesthetics myself and haven't fitted it to my own boat.

We have some 'outdoor carpet' on our balcony.
It's quite good at trapping dirt and Ok to stand on.
The back of it has little plastic bumps on it, so it doesn't trap water under it.
Anything which traps water might cause osmosis?

I'm sure there was an offcut, but I can't find it or remember if it was big enough for the boat's cockpit.
I recall we bought it online, not expensive but a significant minimum order value.

There’s an alternative here Non slip mat EKONOMI, per metre, W 600 mm, dark grey sold by the metre. I actually got an off cut from a project for not very much.

May I ask what the purpose of a cockpit grate is? We used to have one but it disintegrated years ago and was never replaced. Now I can't remember what it achieved!

Still £37/metre. How is it standing up to being stood on? The underlying ribs look spaced quite far apart.

Thanks to all that took the time to provide very helpful replies. I have ordered the Ringmat Octomat as it is UV resistant, can drain below as the main structure sits on bumps and not too expensive. Thanks to ithet for your link.

My cockpit tends to retain an annoying puddle despite the rear drains as it is dead flat. I have tried to trim the boat to drain but it then tends to be a little stern heavy affecting sailing so I need something there to avoid paddling in the cockpit.
