Cockpit drains. Non return valve????

Unless there was any mention of non-return valves, or perhaps a comment about the cockpit flooding and the original set up being unsatisfactory, I really can't see why he is coming to you. He bought a second hand boat.

If there are two of them, sometimes water actually comes back up when heeled.

The trick to fix that is to buy longer hoses and cross them in the lazarette.

Gee, that's something he can do, now that it's his boat! That guy really sounds like a piece of work.

If you cave into this now, there's no telling what could come from him further down the line.

RPT: It is now HIS boat, not yours. You know that, he seems to have missed the point.

All this talk about valves (be they ball, gate of non-return) on cockpit drains has got me worried. I've owned my present sailing cruiser for 23 years and the one before that for 14 years. Both have self draining cockpits with the hull discharges just above the WL (when boat upright) and the cockpit sole just a little above that. No valves of any kind ever fitted on either boat and I'm still here to tell the tale. Have I been sailing around in extreme danger for the last 37 years? The cockpit on both boats is watertight up to companionway level so I've assumed it would flood up like a oversized centreboard box in the event of hull damage / flooding. Any others owners with this arrangement?
