cobra 750

Alf,
scroll down to the Jester Challenge Forum loads of information there, they are going across in 2010 for the Jester Challenge. All sorts of boats doing it, including a 3 from the Crouch/Roach. An Albin Vega 27, Hunter Sonata 223 and a Corribee.
So yours would be very suitable, with the right kit fitted to it.

PS Alan from Bradwell just did the Azores single handed in his Centaur as part of JAC08.

But don't tell anybody on the Liveaboard forum otherwise one or two (thankfully a minority) will insist you can only do it if you have a heavy old boat, preferably steel with loads of ballast, long keel, attached rudder and so on.

Leaving that aside, a Cobra 750 would not be an ideal choice in that size range for such a crossing.

V good on the ballast ratio 46% I believe.

Small main, small easily drainable cockpit

Would go to Azores in one and if good would do the crossing but need to know the rig etc all v good

I finished the RTI on Saturday in 39kts according to my anemometer. It was exciting for 11hrs but I would not contemplate it for days though!.

I love mine but transatlantic is not what it was designed for.
It might cope, but would you?

Excellent little boats with a lot of storage and accommodation for waterline length, good to windward but my feeling is that it might roll like a pig for 3000 miles running downwind in big seas.

No real reason why you shouldn't, though I would suggest an Albin Vega instead might be more comfortable for a similar price.

well if we're suggesting other boats, I'm gonna say the Cobra 850, if you like the 750, the 850 would be even better!

Other than that another one to look at is the Dockrell 27, very impressed with the idea that US buyers sailed it home across the Atlantic. Sod all side decks, but cutter rigged and good for long distance sailing.

thanks very much for all your replies, im better informed now and hoepfully a little wiser, yeh i looked at a Dockrell 27, a nice boat i can stand up in, and i'll investigate the albin vega
