Coastal skipper with exam needed next week

Does anyone know of a Coastal skipper course starting on Monday 9th or Sunday 8th of August, with an exam at the end of it. My daughter is booked on one for these dates, but the school have not booked the exam and can't find a way of doing it. Preferably in the Solent area, but not absolutely necessary. We live in Gloucestershire.

Thanks.

What's the problem with the school booking an examiner? I didn't realise the RYA required that much notice. Or is it a problem because there is only one candidate?

It may be easier to find an examiner.

Assume you want Yachtmaster Coastal? Any RYA sailing school must know how to do this, I would call the RYA and explain the problem, and name the school. They may be able to find an examiner too.

Coastal skipper with eexam

She is the only coastal candidate on the course, the rest are comp crew, The boat is booked out for the weekend and is therefore unavailable. There are two types of coastal, one with assessment and a course completion certificate, the other requires more experience and an 8 hour practical exam, giving a qualification.

The coastal skipper course does not have an exam, the yachtmaster does? My coastal skipper course was continual assessment with cert awarded at the end.

One of the guys with us was doing his coastal skipper exam and he was assessed by a RYA examiner for a passage at the end of the week so there was definitely an exam in his case.

If your daughter is serious enough to want to do the real exam, won't she subsequently want to go on and do the Yachtmaster exam in a year or so? In which case is it worth spending an equal, not insignificant amount of money on the Coastal exam now, which gets you no concessions on the Ym exam? My choice is to just have the Coastal certificate without full exam for now until I do the Ym exam. I think that's a common attitude, I get the feeling not many people do the Coastal exam. Lots say they have it but they just mean the completion certificate. There is plenty of confusion around! (Which I may be worsening by using the old titles but i can't remember the new ones!)

Unless she is thinking of getting the Coastal endorsed and using it commercially, for which it's somewhat limited, what benefit is there in the exam?

Maybe she wants to do the exam for no other reason than the extra challenge and to prove she can do it. You could say the same for the YM exam too if you don't need it commercially.

I have to admit that I've met a few with the course completion certificate and a few who've done the exam. Those I've sailed with who have done the exam (all been Coastal Skippers at the time not the new name, Yachtmaster Coastal) have seemed to be at a higher level than those who've just got the course completion cert. Ok, maybe my personal prejudice based upon a small sample but I would be more confident of any new crew who'd done the exam rather than just completed the course.

It may be that they are struggling to find an examiner to take 'one coastal' exam. Examiners get paid per candidate and one coastal doesn't pay very much...

When I conduct exams in Plymouth, I have to drive 50 miles and I don't get any expenses - only the exam fees. Therefore one Coastal candidate really isn't worth it. Its no help to you, but I'm just explaining the sordid details.

There's a Coastal Skipper practical course completion certificate and a Coastal Certificate Certificate of Competence (now called Yachtmaster Coastal) which is examined in a similar way to a Yachtmaster Offshore.

One allows you to work for pay, one doesn't.
