Coastal Rides - complaint acted upon and resolved

I'm a great believer in giving an organisation the benefit of the doubt when they make a mistake but not when the same mistake is repeated.

This is a name and shame thread for the following reason:

I ordered a Steering Ram, Pressure Hose and Return Hose from coastal rides two weeks ago totalling circa £440 with postage. The pressure hose and ram are fine, all original new parts but the return hose has been something of a challenge for Coastal Rides to provide.

This is the pressure hose provided, very happy with it :

The return hose is similar as can be seen in the schematic below apart for the one end doesn't have the fitment so it should be cheaper (I paid the same price as the pressure hose £72)

This arrived two weeks ago:

Thought someone was having a laugh at the time as I'd paid £72 for a length of rubber and I'd taken the trouble to send Coastal Rides not only the part number required but also the schematic in an email. Complaint raised of course and Coastal Rides apologised stating they'd mistaken the part for item number 40 in the schematic below.

Apology accepted as clearly a mistake in communications so I sent an email detailing the requirement for new and original parts as they'd already provided with the pressure hose. I also included a table with references to the schematic (hose labelled #16) and part number again (#872217) so there's absolutely no scope for a second mistake.

I travelled 2 hours to Soton from Milton Keynes to collect the parts from Kemps Quay confident they'd be correct this time so I could fit the new steering setup myself today with my son. I find the following has been sent, wtf!!!

this above picture shows what appears to be a remanufactured and used part rather than something akin to the pressure hose. Furthermore, the part sent is significantly shorter as can be seen below when compared to the hose I've removed, presumably as it's been cut away from an engine rather than unscrewing the circlip and removing from the oil cooler (#36 in the schematic)

Well cheesed off and really not happy with service from Coastal Rides hence naming and shaming with a recommendation to avoid them if this is the quality control they allow within their outfit.

Just hope they recognise the poor service they've given me and offer up a full refund for a part that is clearly not fit for purpose. I'll be calling them on Monday to express my frustration and ask for a refund.

Another week to look forward to with the boat out of action due to Coastal Rides

feel for you gary but too be honest I would have got my refund before posting this, please don't take that the wrong way as they do need shaming for sure but would be nice to know they have got nothing of yours before you shame them that's all

hope you get sorted

I doubt that'll be an issue Shawn... just needed to vent a little as I've dragged my lad down here to help whereas he'd prefer to be at home playing out with his mates.

Are you near a "Pirtech" firm or similar? I reckon they would be able to assist.

thanks for the advice, we're in Southampton at present but reckon we'll head off home today so my boy has some time with his mates and source a replacement part during the week.

Another frustration is I asked them to post the part to my home address so I could inspect it before travelling, they sent it to Kemps Quay instead ffs.. the weird thing is the original 'bit of hose' that they'd packed in with the Ram was sent to my home address when I'd asked it to be sent to Kemps Quay.. a proper comedy of errors this one :(

completely understand gary I would be fuming just as much as you are just hope they don't read this and play silly buggers

again, cannot see that happening even if they read this mate, they're a big organisation and I would imagine they will see sense and provide a full apology and refund rather than mess a customer about in the open. it will go some way to making amends if they did

You get what you pay for, trying to get parts cheap from a third party dealer will have this kind of result, try your local VP dealer, give them your engine/drive no. and they supply the correct parts, none of this messing around.

Too late now Gary, but all you had to do was drive from the boat to Hyper Hose at Millbrook and they would make up any pipe with your old one as a copy and for a lot less than 400 squid.

thanks for the tip David (and dpb), the hose was £72, the bulk of the cost was with the ram and in fairness to Coastal Rides in that regard, the provided that at a much reduced price when considering they provided new at £230 + vat rather than £683 + vat from Volvo.

I hear you but was really surprised with Coastal Rides as they'd provided the pressure hose and ram perfectly, just cannot understand why they'd then do what they have done with the simplest of parts to provide

sorry for all your hassle Gary.... the silver lining (for what its worth) is the weather is CRUD !!!!.................... (PS. is that why Calley had a serious haircut because he knew you were going to shove him under the engine this weekend????)!!!!!!

Probably just parts they had laying around and thought they would do the job.

I have used Coastal Rides a few times and had excellent service, it seems certain tasks are more difficult than others

That's not too bad when you look at the amount of transactions in the last 12 months, when you look up any large volume sellers they allways have a few negatives.

Whilst not defending CR, I have always had great service from them. Probably because I live local and collect in person. Maybe the issues eminate from the fact he not only deals with new parts but also secondhand parts and pallet purchases from manufacturers excess stock and chandlers which have gone to the wall. So I think his business model is unique, not that it is an excuse. I have always found Paul the owner very helpful, so maybe a phone call direct to him will resolve matters to your satisfaction.
