C\'mon then own up ....

Who has actually completed their shopping list or work list on their boat for this season ...... I don't mean just completed writing it down ..... but actually completed the actual work and installed ?

I know I haven't by a long chalk and wish that I had - but then what to do with those hours when away from boat ....nothing to think / mull over in the mind ....

Always seem to be 1-2 years behind

The job I do now seems to be the one I was thinking about 1-2 years ago ....

I have :
Ignition switch in the locker bought 3 years ago - still not fitted.
Switch panel bought at Boat Jumble 5 yrs ago - same locker and now the battery monitor meter is unreadable ....
Anchor light stopped working 4 yr ago
Mast steaming light .....same

Funny thing is I took my own advice that I give some .... created a Maintenance Book - fine entered the list to do .... mmmm seemed to stop there.

Terrible admission - I cannot be the only one .....

Can\'t keep up.....

....with the list, it grows quicker than I can cross things off it.

I've divided mine into catagories;
Safety - do now
Sailing - do soon (because they're bloody irritating)
General - do when everything else is done.

It's safe to say that the 'maintenance' list never gets touched until things get so bad that they elevate themselves to safety or sailing issues!

I've noticed a patern over the years.

The jobs I enjoy doing (normally cos I'm curious what the 'gizmo' looks like inside) stay on schedule and get done. All the other jobs seems to slip backwards and will be back on the list for next season.

Our MLU program is more or less on track (MLU = Mid-Life Upgrade).

We got & installed all the safety stuff last year. Summer cruise buggered up by no wind, followed by no engine.

This year new engine & new sails. 5 week summer cruise altogether much more enjoyable.

Starting next week: hull & deck repairs, rewire electrics + fit windgen & new batteries, replace electronics.

Boat should be finnished (I use the term broadly here) by X-Mas. Next year's summer cruise should be heaven.

Come 2006 - (very) early retirement. ;oD

PS: bank manager (& wife) turning grey faster than I am.

Actually, I think secretly, many people are envious. They would love to have an excuse to do this kind of project.
I'm afraid I am guilty of 'what is the next thing the boat could do with?' From there you then go on to 'which bit shall I upgrade next'. Sad I know. But the weather keeps spoiling the sailing.

You all make me feel better. Our 23 yr old boat lives on a pontoon with lots of much shinier younger boats and I feel we should continually be doing jobs - never mind the polishing. Have managed a few this season - compass now lives on binnacle rather than on galley floor (it's a long story) but doesn't have light as cable disappeared and therefore needs re-wire !

We had the misfortune to have to employ a delivery crew a few years ago - it was embarassing when briefing them to be continually saying "well that doesn't work" and "that bit's a bit eccentric - it works like this" ! Incentive to get 98% done at least.

My bulkhead compass light .... an LED fitted into a silly rubber piece over the top of the globe - fell of and the lead wa broken at the very end too close to repair ..... so thats another one I've been reminded of now !!

Now I have a friend who while installing a new steering compass onto his boat - dropped it. The compass is fine, but the light has never worked! Talk about making work for yourself.

Funny thing is I assume that it wouldn't be hard to fix ... mine that is .... anew led with leads actually sticking out ! but I have never got around to doing it ..... to be honest rarely look at it anyway !!

Am I the only person who spent the Easter fine weather sorting-out the electrics, fitting the new cooker and the Navtex while watching everyone else go sailing only to have the worst summer weather for >50yr and spend most of my summer cruise storm bound in Holland!

I have'nt finished the list, but I am roughly on track with a five year plan.

I have fitted new windscreens, new head gaskets and overhauled the fuel system plus a load of sevicing and painting so I reckon I've done ok.

Must fit that steaming light though....and put batteries in the MOB light!!!!!

G'day All,

Seems most have lists and little else, good to see some are progressing but it sounds like even their lists are not getting any shorter, one job done and two more added to the list.

We are around 90 days from the start of our cyclone season here and 'some' owners choose this time to haul out and do the antifouling plus a few repairs and modifications.

So I start to get a bit jittery about this time as the calls start coming in; "Do you think we can add some sugar scoops to my cat in a couple of months time; "Can you give me hand with a complete re-wire of the boat in December"; "G'day Brian, I found the perfect plans for that new tender and davits, can you build the tender and davits now so we can fit them in November"; " Was diving under the boat on the weekend and noticed some blisters, I will haul out in mid November, can you have a look at it and give an estimate of the costs to repair and have it finished in time for the re-launch".

Oh, did I mention that this is also our hot and humid time of year, just what you need when confined inside a hull full if dust, cables, resin fumes and owners who 'pop in' to see how things are going, then return to the yacht club bar for the afternoon: no doubt doing up another list of items........

At least you have a list and have a fair idea what you will be doing over the next few months, so spare a thought for us poor souls who have no idea what or how much is about to fall on us.

Wait a minute.........I think I have the answer...............If I double my prices I will only have to do half the jobs, hey, I could even start my own boat yard and spend most of my time throwing darts in board to make up quotes.

No, I take that all back, I have friends that run yards and I know what they have to put up with. And I work on boats owned by friends about 80% of the time, the other 20% are sympathy cases, mercy dashes or emergency repairs.

None of the above are list items though. Oh well better to be busy than bored, I just wish cyclones came in the cooler season.

About the only job i didn't do was Antifoul, just a good pressure wash, and the fouling is no worse than last year!

There seems to be a growing number of boatees that are not using anti-fouling now ..... some may say - to keep Greenpeace happy ? No simply that a) its easier to power-wash now than scrabble about under the boat, b) saves an awful lot of dosh .....

Interesting if a poll and information set could be set up to compare as many owners experience of anti-fouling and not anti-fouling ........this could include, Why did they stop A/f'ing, what difference has there been, Has anyone gone back to A/F'ing after trying a season or two without etc.

I think an interesting data set would immerge. Maybe it would be interesting for the A/F'ing manufacturers to see how people rate their products and value for money ? Mmmmmmm have to think about this one .....
