Thanks everyone for your support. I have no axe to grind with the mods, they do a thankless task and many of them are volunteers. And they have enough on their plate trying to police the idiots in the "The Lounge" (somewhere I rarely visit nowadays). I've not lost any sleep over my thread being locked, what's far more important to me is them turning a blind eye over links in signatures.

If it was a fender sock retailer who complained about my thread then fair enough. I doubt it was a sign maker as I'm on good terms with the guys at Tech Stainless, Funky Monkey and Boat Names - all of whom I've happily sent customers to.

Despite the above, what I think would be cool is some 'group buys'. For example Cantalupi LED light fittings for refurbs / upgrades. Retail, these are expensive but if we could maybe club together for a 100 or so fittings I'm sure we could order them from the manufacture at trade price. Perhaps the organizer could get a little more discount than other participants. This might encourage some people to get the highest quality parts instead of doing nothing or settling for inferior products.

Regarding the "Motor Boat Forum" health in general, the forum format is a little passée as other forms of social media have superseded it. But I think it works just fine and the quality of threads and posts here is better than ever. The kindness / generosity that is shown by many members is fantastic. There's certainly a sense of optimism in the air with many members looking forward to new boats and cruising grounds.

I agree. I've commented on this before but I'd love to see some of the functionalities found on other social media sites carefully integrated into this one. For instance, it would be nice to make a twitter type of post when I see/do/hear something interesting but which doesn't quite seem worthy of a new thread...

I know the forum is based on a standard software that probably doesn't support this but I wonder if there are others that would?

Following JFM's suggestion above, Colhel of this parish and myself have initiated discussions into what we might offer in the way of carbon fibre flagstaffs (sizes, designs, etc), how these might be manufactured and how they might be marketed.

Regarding the general topic of this thread, I really value(d) the feedback from others. Perhaps a solution to the problem would be to have a private forum where anyone who is interested in these things could join / contribute. Due to the limited audience, nobody could get upset that I'm trying to promote my business. Obviously anyone else who wants to discuss their own boating or business ideas would be welcome to post their own threads. I have no idea if this idea would be acceptable to the mods but if its something that people would be interested in contributing too I could suggest it to them.

The trouble is Pete that these private forums get very little activity and eventually die unless the mods will allow you to put a post on the main forums like this one to draw attention to a new post you've made on the private forum but that might be considered advertising by whoever shopped you in the first place.

Alternatively you may want to get email addresses of interested forumites and circulate your ideas that way

Mike, it is possible to subscribe to a forum, not just a thread. I'm just acutely aware that some people are properly busy and won't particuarly want their inboxes to be filled with even more spam!

I didn't realise that, not that the email subscribed threads function has worked properly for me for several years! Maybe thats the way to go then. I guess the private forum wouldn't be that busy so the number of extra email alerts wouldn't be overwhelming

Sounds like we're heading back to the old days of usenet and automailers. It's a shame the mods have become so heavy handed on the forum, they are beginning to suffocate it.
