I just had a random idea for petem's boat business and went to his thread to post it. It wouldn't let me because the thread is "closed", it said stroppily. How does that work? I don't think a thread gets closed after a period of inactivity because I just checked some of my threads started years ago and they're still open for posting. So do the mods close a thread, or does a thread starter have the right to close his/her own thread, or does a Thread Closure Committee do it, or what? And why?

JFM, I got a PM from the Mods:

I'm sorry but, having been brought to our attention, your recent post has been removed as it unfortunately falls within the scope of, and therefore in breach of, the forum's Terms & Conditions of Use - http://www.ybw.com/forums/misc.php?do=showrules - with regard to advertising, promoting, marketing, etc.;

Clause 2 - Advertising
2.1 Companies/individuals must not use the Forum to advertise, promote or market goods or services...
However, you may wish to take an advert with YBW - http://www.ybw.com/advertise

The thread has also been locked as almost all your more recent contributions to it have been verging on promotional in that they signpost advances in your business. Allowing such to remain open creates conflict in how we manage other users who attempt to advertise on the forum, against he T&Cs. I think your thread has had a good run and will remain on the forum for the time being.

Please note that any further breach of the T&C's/sundry guidelines may result in your account being penalised.

Whilst I was slightly pissed off that someone complained I accept the rules and acknowledge that the mods continue to exercise their discretion, e.g. signatures carrying ads, for which I'm grateful.

Still, there's nothing to stop you making suggestions here or via PM / email.

Incidentally, I did look back at that thread recently and there remains some good ideas in there.

Pete

I wonder who complained? Seems an odd complaint to make, especially about someone who has been a regular forum contributor for well over 10 years. Unless you have trodden on the toes of someone who is in the same business that you're trying to break into............

I always thought this was more than just a forum, more of a community of like minded individuals, most of whom would help someone if they could. Maybe the present admin team do not see it the same way.

Ah ok thanks for the explanation. I'm with LJS here; some discretion can be applied when someone has out so much into the forum. I hate it when company middle management make the "conflict" point that the mods above made. There is no general duty to treat people consistently. Oh well, no big deal. No point getting too bothered about it

FWIW, my idea was for Pete to include carbon fibre ensign staffs in his portfolio and I just PMed him more info. They can be made at reasonable cost from stock 30/50mm dia tube depending on the boat. Here's my "home made" one as reminder - ColHel, master machiner, made the s/s parts

I don't blame the mods. If someone complains then they have to act. And they've left my thread intact rather than deleting it.

No Pete, if someone complains they do not have to do anything, only if the complaint is upheld do they need to consider taking action.

Great idea JFM - PM sent.

Given it had 200 odd posts and the aim of a forum is compelling user generated content that keeps people returning it is actually pretty pathetic.

If the audience - us a were so offended we would not have posted so much

Yet another pointless own goal.

^^^Exactly JR
LJS, I don't get your "if upheld", though I do share your overall view. Upholding or not upholding is merely an internal TimeInc method of making a business decision. We need not be concerned whether on the one hand they phone up the Obama and the Pope and ask what they think or on the other hand flip a coin. Bottom line is they are free to decide not to act upon a complaint, or to act on it, and may make that choice as capriciously as they want.

I didn't notice the "closure" before this thread, but fwiw I also think it's an answer to a question that deserved to be ignored for good.
Makes me wonder what the admins would do with a new thread on the subject of random ideas on anyone's (as opposed to petem's) boat business...

I'm sure anyone that uses Pete & is happy with the product / service will be able to say so here as we all have done when good service has so deserved. There will then be multiple threads for someone to complain about. When Atlas comes out next month & I have discussed removing existing letters with man, I may well start one myself. Like Jfm's idea also, Mmm.

What I was trying to say is exactly the same as you have done here!

Oh FFS thats ridiculous. Whoever on this forum (and I take it that it must have been a forumite?) who reported that thread ought to be ashamed of themselves. Oh well we've just started another one

Mind you this thread probably given petem more promotion than leaving the original in place. That said I thought the original was more about seeking ideas from fellow boat owners than advertising services. I also understand we have to have rules and we have to live with paid advertising (hate those banner ads) to keep this excellent forum going.

I get the feeling that forum moderation is now the province of a graduate entrant who has all the paper qualifications but non of the life experience to enable the making sensible decisions.

I always see this forum as something of a family. Whilst there are people who wander in and out we pretty much know each other and if I don't know you someone I am familiar with knows you.

We all seem to get along and self police where necessary. At times we are passionate but that's surely a good thing, it shows we care. Having commercial contributors adds depth and authority to the place.

Yes, I know the rules and I totally understand why they are there. The last thing we want is to be spammed by internet marketers, Budha knows everywhere else on the internet is ruined by it. But come on, a bit of chat amongst friends?

Another very large forum is all but collapsing due to the exit of their longstanding human management bods replaced by children without a clue. I don't think we are there yet here, Richard Shead amongst others provides a face, all be it a hideously ugly one :)

Henry :)
