Clever Dick Comes Unstuck

Having seen the folks from Windermere who appeared on the Menai after the limit was brought in I came to understand why it had become necessary. The almost total lack of consideration displayed by these people towards other water users was incredible. Just one example - using mooring buoys as a slaloom course to tow a water skier through. Thankfully, I don't think they ever really came to grips with the tidal system in the Menai and have now moved on elsewhere.......

I don't see why relating true incidents is 'colourful' or 'hyperbole', suggest you look up these terms old fruit ! :)

One can only admire your extraordinary and impressive powers of detailed recall of an event which occurred at the age of seven or eight.

The only incident at that age I can remember with such clarity is Pater's hand connecting with my face after I back chatted mamma.

Chinita,

well having speedboat approaching fast one side, skier the other isn't the sort of thing one forgets really, is it ?!

It's led to a lifetime of becoming twitchy whenever I see a speedboat in the offing, so was a good lesson in self preservation...:)

Best forget loch lomond especially if people keep recomending it for powerboating they are already banning people from the islands because people keep chopping trees down for firewood and leaving rubbish strewn about. On google earth there are parts of the islands that were green with trees and bushes but now there bare with stumps everywhere,i reckon its the added pressure from the windermere speed limits that has caused this were before the growth could recover over winter.
And watching a group from newcastle chopping trees down with a chainsaw didnt help either.
I think it is very selfish of the windermere anti wake brigade to keep recomending a place that is way more important than windermere.

Come on, that's not fair. I have sailed on Loch Lomond and thought it was better than Windermere, apart from the PWC noise.

On Loch Lomond they have speed limits near the shore and the islands but most of it is unlimited, that would be acceptable on Windermere, for me.

Speed limits have sod all to do with littering. I was suprised to see the carp in the islands, from abandoned tents and camping debris mainly.
Chopping down trees is just off side, no matter which type of water user does it. I saw 4 or 5 fishermen in day boats loaded up with firewood congregating for an evening ashore when we were there, OK if it's sustainable but not if they are chopping trees down.

Loch Lomond is no way more or less important than Windermere and folks trashing either place should be stopped.

Aquaplane,

zero speed limit in the middle of the lake might be OK in your Centaur, but it would be lethal to dinghy sailors...

As for PWC, well Loch Lomond are daft if they allow them; Windermere is a National Park, not the car park at the back of Halfords.

I would like to revisit Windermere one day, I imagine it's a huge amount better now with the speed limit, though I am aware there is still a problem with yobs at times.

It was never particularly on my 'to do' list, but I've noticed threads from time to time mentioning the over-zealous police at Loch Lomond, so combined with PWC's and unrestricted speedboats the place has slightly less appeal than a minefield.

As far as I was aware, Loch Lomond now has a camping ban, which is why the thoughtless scrotes end up at Loch Awe now, leaving as much detritus behind as they did at Lomond.

Incidentally, I've had quite a few dealings with the Ranger mentioned in this report, Tim Maggs. Very mild mannered and easygoing, and not the type of person to be vindictive for the sake of it, i'd be inclined to believe him on face value.
